Transforming Northwest Indiana
As the largest global steel manufacturer ArcelorMittal's commitments extend beyond the bottom line to include the people in which we invest, the communities in which we support and the world in which we operate. In no place is this more apparent than in Northwest Indiana, a diverse community woven together with common values where people are proud to work, live and play.
ArcelorMittal is proud to be a part of this community and through our values of Sustainability Quality, and Leadership, we are finding new and innovative ways to give back to the community, while supporting its growth and future development. Our commitment to Northwest Indiana is demonstrated through partnerships with organizations that positively impact the region and
align with our corporate responsibility focus areas of environment, education and health and safety.
The stewardship and conservation of our shared environment is a leading priority for ArcelorMittal. Demonstrating the commitment to our core value of Sustainability, in 2008 we became the first steel manufacturer to receive the ENERGY STARĘ Partner of the Year for Energy Management award by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Department of Energy. We are pleased to have received this honor and are hopeful that we will be recognized again in 2009.
Significant projects at some of our Northwest Indiana operations led to our ENERGY STARĘ certification. One example includes the installation of a process gas recovery turbine at our Indiana Harbor facility to reroute gases created during steelmaking for more efficient uses. The energy created by this turbine provides an efficient energy source that allows the company to reduce dependence on external energy supplies.
Another example of our environmental stewardship in Northwest Indiana is the ArcelorMittal Great Lakes Watershed Restoration Program. In this program, ArcelorMittal collaborates with environmental partners, such as the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, EPA, National Ocean and Atmospheric Association and the Forest Service to fund wetland protection and restoration throughout the Great Lakes watershed region.
Like you, ArcelorMittal knows that the Great Lakes basin is crucial to the well-being of our employees, communities and operations. We are committed to sustaining the Great Lakes by working with our program partners to provide grants to organizations focused on habitat restoration, water quality improvements, watershed planning and management, applied research and conservation education.
Another core value for ArcelorMittal is Leadership. A value we demonstrate through support of education initiatives reflecting our conviction that math and science skills are essential to developing the future leaders of Northwest Indiana.
We understand the importance of building our students skills in STEM - Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. Last year ArcelorMittal funded diversity training for math and science teachers at two Portage Township schools. The training focused on improving classroom instruction and student achievement for more than 500 local students by preparing teachers to interact and teach more effectively to an increasingly diverse student population.
The health and safety of our employees and neighbors is a top priority at ArcelorMittal, demonstrated by improved safety performance through a significant reduction in the frequency and lost time due to safety incidents. We look beyond our own operations to strengthen the health and wellbeing of the community through various programs that positively impact the Northwest Indiana community in coordination with local partners, including the American Heart Association (AHA) and American Red Cross (ARC).
For more than five years, ArcelorMittal has partnered with the local AHA to educate our employees and the community about heart disease and provide preventative resources. In addition to our employees, a considerable grant helped provide kits with healthy lifestyle tips to 200 local elementary schools. The funding also supplied area hospitals, fire stations and other community organizations with CPR training kits along with bi-lingual education materials.
Our commitment to health and safety also impacts local disaster response initiatives, which was recently demonstrated through the company's support of the ARC. ArcelorMittal provided a critical grant to help Northwest Indiana's ARC chapter cope with the severe flooding that struck the community in 2008. Many ArcelorMittal employees in Northwest Indiana volunteered to help assess flood damage, manage shelters, answer phones and distribute essential supplies to those affected by the flooding.
These projects provide a few examples of how ArcelorMittal works within Northwest Indiana to be a good corporate citizen. Together, with our employees and the support of the community, we will continue to engage community partners in programs that have a positive impact on the environment, education and the health and safety of the greater Northwest Indiana region.
