Like many home builders, for years the owners and employees at VanDerNoord Homes have been nomads.
Instead of a permanent location, they would set up an office in the garage of a model home in whatever subdivision they were currently working. But all that has changed with the opening of a permanent office for the convenience of their customers and to grow the business.
"For the sake of our customers and employees we decided to open an office and selection room," said Rick Mosell, co-owner with Doug VanDerNoord. "Our customers have become too busy to be flying off to different contractors to look at floor coverings and light fixtures. We will now have one stop shopping where they can select all their interiors."
In looking for a site, they chose a former ceramics shop, which the Schererville Historical Society has pictures of, since it is more than 100 years old.
"When we were remodeling, we found newspapers from the '20s and '30s stuffed in the walls, it had been used for insulation," Mosell said. "We remodeled to stay true to the nostalgic look of the building, and have gotten many compliments on it. It is a central location for the company's owners, and great for our clients coming from Illinois."
The company purchased the 5,000-square-foot building. They are currently using half and making the other half available for rent.
VanDerNoord Homes, now in its fourth generation, got its start back in 1926.
Although originally a home builder dominant in Lansing and South Holland, the company now primarily builds in Northwest Indiana. The company constructs between 40 and 60 homes a year, in the $150,000 to $300,000 range. They are currently building in six different sites, five in St. John, and Autumn Creek in Schererville.
"Our cottage homes in Barrington Estates in Hobart have been very popular," Mosell said. "They offer lawn maintenance and snow removal, good for people who want to downsize."
Low interest rates have kept VanDerNoord going strong, despite downturns in the economy.
"Building is one of the only industries that didn't feel the effects of this recession at all, due to record low interest rates," Mosell said. "People are also flocking across the border for lower taxes in Indiana."
Mosell thinks business will improve even more with the new location.
"We want to do between 60 and 100 homes per year," he said. "Now that we are staying in one location, our customers will be able to find us more easily."
