Sunday, 22 November, 2009 - Little Builders exhibition arrives at Kohl Children’s Museum

“Construction” starts at Kohl Children’s Museum of Greater Chicago on Tuesday, Oct. 6, 2009 with the arrival of the Little Builders exhibition. Little Builders encourages children to use the tools offered in their own unique way, giving them the chance to grow creatively and allowing them to personalize their experience. As part of the Little Builders exhibition, children are given the opportunity to dress in a hard hat and orange safety vest before entering the exhibit. For added fun and a more genuine role-playing experience, children are also given a push cart and orange cones to use during their time in the exhibit. The exhibition closes Sunday, Jan. 10, 2010. Admission prices are $$7.50 for children and adults and $$6.50 for senior citizens. Children under 1 year old and members are free. (847) 832-6600.www.kohlchildrensmuseum.org.

Sunday, 22 November, 2009 - Liam Gillick: Three perspectives and a short scenario

British artist Liam Gillick’s sophisticated body of work ranges from his signature “platform” sculptures to wall paintings, text sculptures, and print texts that reflect the increasing gap between utopian idealism and the actualities of the world. This exhibition is the most significant and comprehensive of Gillick’s work in an American museum to date, comprising a major site-specific installation in the gallery ceiling as well as a presentation of his design and published works, and a film documenting projects from the entirety of his career. The MCA is the only American venue for the exhibition.

Sunday, 22 November, 2009 - Jeremy Deller: It Is What It Is

It Is What It Is presents nonpartisan and unscripted public conversations about Iraq by British artist Jeremy Deller. During the exhibit, a revolving cast of veterans, journalists, scholars, and Iraqi nationals who have expertise in a particular aspect of the region and/or first-hand experience of Iraq take up residence in the museum gallery space with the express purpose of encouraging discussion with visitors. On display is the remnant of a car that was destroyed in an explosion on Al-Mutanabbi, a street in Baghdad, in 2007, a handmade banner by artist Ed Hall known for his work for trade unions and other interest groups, and a wall graphic juxtaposing two maps -- Iraq and the United States.

Sunday, 22 November, 2009 - MCA: UBS 12 x 12: Haptic and Lisa Slodki: Nov 7

Chicago musicians Haptic and video artist Lisa Slodki explore the symbiotic relationship connecting sounds and images in an installation and series of live performances as part of the monthly UBS 12 x 12 New Artist/New Work series at the MCA. During their live performances, Slodki generates and projects digitally altered images in response to Haptic’s improvised audio compositions made by amplifying sounds from Slodki’s video equipment. Their live performances are free as part of Free Tuesdays and take place in the month of November, on November 10, 17, and 24, at 7 pm. In addition to the performances, Haptic and Slodki create an installation where two VCRs play Slodki’s looped images from the performances on three small video monitors while several of Haptic’s small microphones capture, amplify, and transmit mechanical sounds from the video equipment in the 12 x 12 gallery.

Sunday, 22 November, 2009 - Italics: Italian Art between Tradition and Revolution 1968-2008

While the term 'Italian art' conjures iconic frescoes, romantic human forms, and gilded richness, Italy is also a source of new creativity and innovation. Italics: Italian Art between Tradition and Revolution 1968-2008, co-presented by the MCA and the Palazzo Grassi, Venice, is a groundbreaking exhibition about Italian art and creativity that offers an unprecedented look at the artistic production of a country where cultural change has often been defined by the persistence of the past. Presented in arrangements loosely structured around themes of family, self, politics, and design, Italics includes work by more than 80 Italian artists who forge new identities from deep roots blossoming in many different directions. This exhibition is guest curated by Francesco Bonami, artistic director of the Fondazione Sandretto ReRebaudengo per l'Arte in Turin, Pitti Immagine Discovery in Florence, and ENEL Contemmporanea.

Sunday, 22 November, 2009 - SOUTH AFRICAN WINE FESTIVAL

Experience the wines of South Africa at GEJA’S CAFÉ’S
SOUTH AFRICAN WINE FESTIVAL
September 1-November 30, 2009
Chicago--Guests of Geja’s Café, 340 W. Armitage, will enjoy many flavorful wines from South Africa during the fondue restaurant’s South African Wine Festival from September 1-November 30, 2009.
The winemaking traditions of South Africa often represent a hybridization of Old World wine making and new. Since the end of Apartheid, many producers have been working on producing a more 'international style' of wine. Establishing new laws to help dictate quality and recent access to international markets has unleashed a burst of new energy, investment and interest.
“I was surprised to learn that South Africa has been producing wine since 1659” says Kirby Matthews, Geja’s Wine Director. “They’ve been overlooked in the world market for so long. It is a shame because after tasting the featured wines, I am committed to making them commonplace on Geja’s wine list. I hope our guests are as excited as I am to experience new wines from an old world”.
Throughout the festival, Geja’s wine list will feature an extended selection of South African wines available both by the glass and the bottle at low promotional prices.
Among the featured wines will be:

Whites Vintage Glass Bottle
Fleur du Cap Sauvignon Blanc, Western Cape	2007	10.00	39.00
Meerlust Chardonnay, Stellenbosch	2006	9.00	38.00
Nederburg “Lyric” White Blend, Western Cape	2006	7.25	28.00

Reds
Fleur du Cap Pinotage, Stellenbosch	2007	7.50	29.00
Guardian Peak “Frontier” Red Blend, Western Cape	2007	7.75	30.00
Plaisir de Merle Cabernet Sauvignon, Paarl	2002	N/A	60.00

Known for romantic fondue dining—food one prepares and shares—and an extensive list of moderately priced wines, Geja’s features over 20 combinations of fondue entrees in addition to traditional cheese fondue and flaming chocolate dessert fondue. A cozy wine cellar atmosphere, private booths and candlelight contribute to its intimate surroundings, with live flamenco and classical guitarists performing on weekends to enhance the ambiance.
Hours for Geja’s Café are: Monday through Thursday, 5 to 10:00 p.m.; Friday, 5 p.m. to 11p.m.; Saturday, 5 p.m. to 11:30; and Sunday, 4:30 to 9:30 p.m. Valet parking is available. For reservations and information on

Sunday, 22 November, 2009 - Hairspray

Lincolnshire, IL — The Marriott Theatre continues its highly acclaimed 2009 season with HAIRSPRAY, the show the New York Post calls “A great big fat gorgeous hit!” This all-new production of the Tony Award-winning international phenomenon explodes onto the Marriott Theatre stage September 23rd. Direct from Broadway, where it played for over 2,500 performances, the production begins previews September 23rd, opens Wednesday, September 30th at 8 p.m., and runs through December 6th, 2009. Chicagoland favorite and multiple Jeff Award winner Marc Robin (Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, The Full Monty), has been tapped to direct and choreograph.

'You Can't Stop the Beat' to this family friendly show that is piled bouffant-high with laughter, romance and full of enough deliriously tuneful songs to fill a non-stop platter party. Set in Baltimore in 1962, HAIRSPRAY is the story of pleasantly plump teen, Tracy Turnblad, who does whatever it takes to fulfill her lifelong dream of appearing on the popular Corny Collins Show. But can this plus-size trendsetter in dance and fashion vanquish the program's reigning princess, win the heart of heartthrob Link Larkin, and integrate a television show without denting her fabulous 'do? Only in HAIRSPRAY! “Welcome to the '60s!”
HAIRSPRAY, which won eight Tony awards including Best Musical, and inspired the 2007 blockbuster feature film, features music by Marc Shaiman, lyrics by Scott Wittman and Marc Shaiman, and a book by Mark O'Donnell and Thomas Meehan. The score’s upbeat, oldies-inspired songs which include “You Can’t Stop the Beat,” “Welcome to the 60’s,” and “Hairspray” will have audiences dancing in the aisles.
HAIRSPRAY serves up an all-star cast and leading the pack is Marriott Theatre and Chicagoland favorite Ross Lehman (Hot Mikado, The Producers) as Edna Turnblad.
