The very upscale Harrison West subdivision received secondary plat approval from the Valparaiso Plan Commission last week and appears ready to become the city's first gated community, but that doesn't mean the literary quality of the legalese in the subdivision's covenants will be any more exciting than less posh developments.
The project is set to begin construction any day, and the text of the Harrison West rules, regulations and residential restrictions run a total of 64 pages. For those prospective residents who would like a little preview of the contents, Plan Commission lawyer Bruce Berner had this to say prior to the commission's action on the plat approval: "If you're having trouble sleeping, this will do it."
William Ferngren, lawyer for the developer and author of the covenants, pleaded, "Come on. I worked hard on those."
The literary world is tough.
