CHRISTMAS AT THE BARKER MANSION | Michigan City

Christmas at Barker Mansion features favorite and traditional stories and poems of the Christmas season. "Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer" leads the visitor on a journey through three floors of decorations illustrating literature both past and present. "The Twelve Days of Christmas," "Candy Cane Lane," "Cricket on the Hearth," "The Nutcracker," "Little Women" and "The Grinch Who Stole Christmas" are among those depicted. The city of Crown Point hosts its first Country Holidays celebration from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and Sunday at the Lake County Fairgrounds on Court Street. CHRONICLES OF THE CITY | East Chicago

The East Chicago Room, housed in the East Chicago Public Library, 2401 E. Columbus Drive, contains a wealth of photographs, documents and other resources chronicling the city's more than 100-year history. MYSTERIES OF THE MARSH AND MORE | Chicago

Three new exhibits now are open at Notebaert Nature Museum, 2430 N. Cannon Drive. Mysteries of the Marsh includes an animal laboratory allowing visitors to observe museum research. Rooftop Stop showcases the museum's expanded rooftop gardens, and RiverWorks is an interactive exhibit showing the importance of river ecology.

BLACK-AND-WHITE LANDMARKS | Chicago

"Landmarks before the Lens" exhibit includes 72 black-and-white photos taken by area photographers of 24 landmarks and historic districts in an ongoing display in the Landmark Chicago Gallery of the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs, 78 E. Washington St.

REPLICA OF NATIVE AMERICAN HABITAT | Chicago

THE PAWNEE EARTH LODGE has re-opened at The Field Museum, 1400 S. Lake Shore Drive. Visitors can experience the life of the Central Plains Pawnees with a fully furnished replica made of cottonwood, willow and prairie grass. The event is free with admission.

LOTS TO SEE AT THE ZOO | Chicago

Lincoln Park Zoo features 35 acres of zoo grounds and more than 1,100 mammals, reptiles and birds. Visit the new Regenstein Center, which houses 24 chimpanzees and gorillas in natural habitats. Take a safari through Africa, have a splashing good time at the Kovler Sea Lion Pool, or see the big cats at the Kovler Lion House. The zoo is located at 2200 N. Cannon Drive at Fullerton Parkway, and is open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. Admission is free.

TOUCH A SEA URCHIN | Chicago

Interactive Sea Star Quest is the most hands-on exhibit ever at the Shedd Aquarium. Guests not only will be able to see the many creatures that move along the ocean's floor, they will be able to touch them. The exhibit is open through Jan. 9. Adler Planetarium and Astronomy Museum is at 1300 S. Lake Shore Drive. Admission is $15 for adults, $12 for children and senior citizens, and $5 for members. A Family Star Pack is $45 and includes admission for two adults and two children or one adult and three children.
