GIRLS BASKETBALL | INDIANA ALL-STARS

Cassie Pruzin doesn't usually retrieve her family's mail.

She's glad she did that Saturday.

The Crown Point guard and DePauw recruit received news that she'd been selected for the Indiana All-Star girls basketball team.

"I saw the letter from the all-stars, and I just started screaming," Pruzin said. "I didn't think they sent rejection letters.

"I haven't stopped smiling since I opened the letter."

Fellow Duneland Athletic Conference representative Cassie Kerns of Valparaiso also made the team, as well as Valparaiso University recruit Aimee Litka (South Bend St. Joseph's).

Pruzin wasn't shocked to be named to the team, but the guard had her doubts. After a subpar performance at last week's Indiana North-South All-Star Classic, Pruzin said she was a little nervous about the impending news.

"I was anxious to find out. I figured a lot of people had an equal shot to make it," said Pruzin, who drove down Saturday afternoon to visit brother T.J. at DePauw.

"I talked with my friend about the news all of the way down there. Things are suddenly a lot better."

Kerns, a UConn recruit, wasn't sweating the news. She finished second in Miss Basketball voting. She also was named Gatorade Player of the Year in Indiana and was a first-team AP All-State pick.

"This was kind of like any other week," said Kerns, who received the news in Saturday's mail. "I was a little more eager during the week (leading up to) Miss Basketball."

Kerns spent time doing other things this week, like gabbing with future coach Geno Auriemma.

"We had a casual conversation," Kerns said of her Tuesday talk. "We talked about my art work. We talked about the restaurant he was in the process of opening. He's thinking about having me design a label for the wine."

Both players will now have a chance to play with All-Star head coach Jack Campbell of Chesterton.

"I've battled them for years, so this should be a lot of fun," Campbell said of past DAC contests. "We should have a great time."

Campbell admitted that making the cuts was the hardest part.

"You'll have some disappointed people," said Campbell, who's daughter Jackie didn't make the team in 1999. "I've been on the other end of that myself. There's always somebody who thinks that they shouldn't have been left off."
