GIRLS BASKETBALL

It didn't take long for Merrillville to find a new girls basketball coach.

Amy Govert, a Highland grad, has been promoted to the top position after four seasons as varsity assistant for the Pirates. Govert replaces Bob Maicher, who resigned after guiding the Pirates to a 45-21 record in three seasons.

"I didn't expect this to happen now, but I'm excited for the opportunity," Govert said. "It's a dream to coach in the Duneland (Conference) against (Crown Point's Tom) May, (Valparaiso's Greg) Kirby, (Lake Central's Tom) Megyesi and (Chesterton's Jack) Campbell."

Govert, a 1995 Highland grad, was a three-sport standout in basketball, volleyball and softball in high school. She went on to play softball at Valparaiso University. Govert has been a math teacher at Merrillville for five years and is also the softball coach at the school. She said she'll coach both sports.

"I love softball, too," Govert said. "I'm going to give up volleyball, though. I've put a lot of time and effort (into softball) and couldn't leave the girls."

Govert said she plans to meet with her players today. The Pirates return All-Area center Brittney Moore, who averaged 10.6 points and 11.6 rebounds a game as a junior.

Merrillville is also waiting word from the IHSAA on former Lew Wallace standout Sharon Houston, a 6-foot-2 center, who sat out last season. Houston, a D-I prospect, averaged 22.1 points and 13 rebounds a game as a sophomore. She's currently taking classes at Merrillville and will be a senior next fall.

The Pirates graduate seven seniors from a team that finished 12-10 this past season.

Maicher was a head coach for 11 years and is 131-53 overall, including 86-32 in eight seasons at Munster.
