PORTAGE | Marsha Moore says she's not THAT kind of fan.
The Portage woman insists she's not nutty -- simply the "ultimate fan" of Anton Fig, drummer for "Late Show with David Letterman." And she's got the blog to prove it.
Started in 2003, Moore's Web log has become a clearinghouse for all things Fig. She posts pictures, news snippets and promos for her favorite musician's CD.
Moore, 34, figures she spends about five hours a week maintaining the blog. She gets a couple hundred e-mails a month from other fans, but she has closed the blog to comments for the time being because it got to be too much.
"I have a life," she says. That life includes raising two kids, going to school and taking care of an ill parent.
She says she's not at all like the New Mexico woman who last month sought a restraining order against New York-based Letterman for alleged harassment in secret messages.
That, Moore says, is a sick situation.
"For fans like me, it makes us look bad. ... I don't pursue people. I don't send them a thousand e-mails a day. I took something I liked and ran with it."
It all started when Moore sent Fig a letter of support after a 1987 skit on the show where the drummer bit the head off a fake bird and was showered with criticism.
"People get so upset over nothing. I thought, I'm just going to write him a letter. I never thought I'd get anything back."
But she got the first of about 25 mailings that have included autographed pictures and other memorabilia over the years.
And when Fig's CD "Figments" came out in 2002, she took it upon herself to help spread the word.
Fig's PR people became interested in her interest, she says, and she has "appeared" on about five radio interviews with him to promote the CD.
The first left her feeling devastated after her treatment by Chicago radio host Kevin Matthews.
"I felt kind of portrayed as a psycho fan," she said.
But she discovered an interest through the effort and now is studying for a degree in marketing at DeVry University in Merrillville.
Moore has never met the drummer in a black beret in person, but her ultimate dream is to do so in New York. If someone offered her airfare, she says, "I"d be on the next airplane in a heartbeat -- I would."
But, she repeats, she's not an obsessed 14-year-old and he's not her idol.
"It's become someone wanting to meet someone they've been corresponding with over the past 18, 19 years. He seems like a nice guy."
And what about Jay Leno?
"I'm sure he's a great guy," Moore says, "but my heart's with the 'Late Show.' "
