DEPRESSION | Valparaiso 

The Depression, Bipolar Support Alliance features Hole to Whole: Healthy Steps to Recover From Depression for its Aug. 2 lecture held at the Aled P. Davies Independence House, 1454 W. Lincolnway. Kyle Otten, director of Beyond Boundaries and Experiential Therapy, will be the featured speaker. The group meets at 6 p.m. on the first and third Wednesdays of each month. This is a free support group for people diagnosed with depression, manic depression or bipolar disorder as well as for friends and families. The Depression, Bipolar Support Alliance also holds meetings in LakeCounty at 7 p.m. on the second and fourth Mondays of the month. Those meetings are held in the hospitality room downstairs in Methodist Hospital, 8701 Broadway, Merrillville.

 WATER CARNIVAL | South Haven

The South Haven unit of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Porter County holds a water carnival from 2 to 4 p.m. July 21 at the club, 723 Longrun Road. The carnival is open to the public. The Torch Club Water Carnival will feature special games, ring toss, sponge throw, water balloons, pick-a-duck, slip and slide and the famous dunk tank. Each ticket costs 10 cents. Food and drinks will be sold.

WAR BIRD DAY | Wheeler

Midwest Sundowners hold the annual War Bird Day Saturday at Rainford Field for remote control model airplanes. Pilot registration starts at 8 a.m., meeting it at 9 and flying starts at 9:30. Lunch is served at noon. See a wide range of planes from WWI through current models in an AMA-sanctioned event. Any type of military aircraft is welcome, but pilots must be AMA members. Admission is free. To reach the field, take U.S. 30 to 725 W, and go north to 450 N., east to 650 W. and north to the flying field.

HAVE A VOICE | Portage

The Portage Township YMCA youth-led group VOICE is an anti-tobacco movement of participants, 12 to 17 years. VOICE meets from 5 to 6 p.m. July 24 at the YMCA, 3100 Willowcreek Road. The group works to spread three messages: VOICE is not against smokers, they are against the tobacco industry; VOICE wants to expose unfair marketing practices of Big Tobacco; VOICE wants to empower teens with the information they need to fight back against the tobacco industry and reduce teen tobacco use in Indiana. VOICE organizes and participates in many fun activities and events to promote tobacco-free teens in Indiana.

GYMNASTICS CLINIC | Portage

The Portage Township YMCA holds a gymnastics clinic for girls 4 to 8 years old from 9:30 a.m. to noon July 26 in the gymnastics room, door F, at Portage High School East, 6450 E. U.S. 6. The goal of the clinic will be to introduce and develop age and ability level skills on vault, uneven bars, balance beam and floor exercise through fun and structured activities. All gymnasts will make a take-home souvenir craft to remember their experience. Snack and drink are included in the $15 clinic fee.

Vacation Bible School | Portage

Portage First United Methodist Church invites all children to become archaeologists at the summer Vacation Bible School, Adventure of the Treasure Seekers: Exploring God's Promises. The action begins from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. July 31 through Aug. 4 at the church, 2637 McCool Road.Vacation Bible School is for children 3 and 4 years old when accompanied by an adult and children through fifth grade. There also is an adult class.

Chesterton | Class of 1966

The Chesterton High School class of 1966 will have its 40-year reunion from 6:30 to 10:30 Saturday at Gelsosomas Pizzeria, 371 Indian Boundary Road in Chesterton. It will be a casual get together. LAUGH FOR HEALTH | Portage

Terri Quartucci with the Porter County Visiting Nurse Association leads Laugh for the Health of It! at 1 p.m. July 25 at Miller's Senior Living Community-Assisted Living Apartments, 5911 Lute Road. The agenda includes humorous stories and jokes from noted celebrities, including Bob Hope and George Burns. Bring your own funny stories and jokes to share. This program is free, and the public is invited. Reservations are requested, as space is limited. Refreshments will be served.

SEWING CONTEST | Valparaiso

The Porter County Extension Homemakers holds an annual fashion sewing contest for adults July 27 at the Porter County Fair. Check-in is at noon in the Open Class Exhibit Area with judging at 1 p.m. at the Park Place Pavilion. Call to obtain an entry form and full set of rules. Registration deadline is July 24. Open-class competition at the Porter County Fair is for adults 18 and older who are not participating in 4-H. All exhibits must be entered between noon and 8 p.m. Sunday at the exhibit building except foods, which are entered from 9 to 10 a.m. Thursday. Home Economics Open Class is for all adults who are over 18 and not participating in 4-H. All exhibits except food are due at the Exhibit Building from noon to 8 p.m. Sunday.

COMPLETE STREETS | Portage

The Northern Indiana Regional Planning Commission hosts a Complete Streets Seminar July 26 at Woodland Park Community Center, 2100 Willowcreek Road. The idea of Complete Streets is to design and rebuild streets to enable safe access for all users, including pedestrians, bicyclists, motorists and bus riders. CREATIVE WRITING | Portage

Jane Schroeder conducts a Creative Writing Workshop for young adults in sixth through 12th

grades from 6:45 to 8 p.m. Mondays, July 17 through Aug. 28, at the Portage Public Library, 2665

Irving St. Cost is $12 for the seven sessions. All supplies are provided. Class limit is 12 people. Schroeder began writing when she retired from nursing 12 years ago. She has had articles published in "The Message," "The Catalyst Literary Journal" and "American Fitness" magazine. She belongs to the writers group, Write-On Hoosiers.
