DEPRESSION | Valparaiso 

The Depression, Bipolar Support Alliance features Hole to Whole: Healthy Steps to Recover From Depression for its Wednesdaylecture held at the Aled P. Davies Independence House, 1454 W. Lincolnway. Kyle Otten, director of Beyond Boundaries and Experiential Therapy, will be the featured speaker. The group meets at 6 p.m. on the first and third Wednesdays of each month. This is a free support group for people diagnosed with depression, manic depression or bipolar disorder as well as for friends and families. The Depression, Bipolar Support Alliance also holds meetings in LakeCounty at 7 p.m. on the second and fourth Mondays of the month. Those meetings are held in the hospitality room downstairs in Methodist Hospital, 8701 Broadway, Merrillville.

DAY CAMP | Portage

The Portage Township YMCA still is accepting registrations for the Summer Day Camp program. Summer Day Camp serves children entering kindergarten through eighth grade. Summer Day Camp ends on Aug. 18 and is held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. Extended care hours are available from 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Participants have the opportunity to swim daily. BROWN BAGGERS | Valparaiso

The Valpo Brown Baggers meets from noon to 1 p.m. Aug. 8 at the Valparaiso Public Library, 103 Jefferson St. The group will discuss "1776" by David McCullough.

PHOTO EXHIBIT | Gary

Our Children, Our World is on exhibit through Oct. 28 at the Gary Public Library, 220 W. 5th Ave. The exhibit features photos by children from Gary; Accra, Ghana; Pinar del Rio, Cuba; and Washington, D.C. The Gary children took pictures of the National Lakeshore.

Duneland YMCA offers before- and afterschool care. This program is headed by certified teachers who will help with homework. Opens 6 a.m. and runs after school until 6 p.m.

FUN ZONE | Chesterton

Duneland YMCA offers the Fun Zone from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. weekdays at the YMCA, 215 Roosevelt St.. The program is free to members and serves children, infants through 10 years.

TEEN WEIGHT TRAINING | Chesterton

Duneland YMCA offers a weight-training class for youths 12 to 14 years old Aug. 8, 10, 15 and 17 at the YMCA, 215 Roosevelt St. The four sessions teach safety, form, goal setting, weight room etiquette and healthy lifestyles. Registration is required, and class size is limited. Members pay $15, while nonmembers pay $30. This class is a requirement for this age group to use the fitness equipment at the YMCA.

VOLUNTEER TRAINING | Merrillville

Harbor Light Hospice is offering a Volunteer Training Program for adult applicants seeking to provide companionship visits to hospice patients and families in Lake and Porter counties. All applicants are asked to make a minimum one-year commitment. Volunteers will be trained to provide emotional and practical support to caregivers in a home setting, and one-on-one visits in a nursing home setting. Space is limited, and screened applicants will be admitted on a first come, first served basis. For more information about the training program which is scheduled to begin the week of Sept. 18, call Cheryl Mioduski, volunteer coordinator.

PRESCHOOL | Westville

Sunshine Station Preschool is accepting enrollments for the 2006-07 school year. Classes are held from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Wednesdays and Fridays. The enrollment fee is $15. Tuition for a four-week session is $60. The preschool accepts children 3 to 5 years old.

CHRISTMAS IN AUGUST | Portage

Ginny Smith, one-stroke instructor, will teach an all-day workshop, "Christmas in August," using the one-stroke painting technique from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Aug. 12 at the Portage Public Library, 2665 Irving St. Projects include Christmas angel on a sheet of music and reindeer on a sled. No experience is necessary to learn this technique. The cost of this class is $45, which includes all supplies and a donation to the library. Students may bring their own brushes or purchase them for $10. Bring your own lunch. There is a limit of 15 people for this class. A $20 deposit is due at registration.
