Sadly, after placing more than 100 birds, the Northwest Indiana Bird Association (NWIBA) operating out of DeMotte has disbanded and the Web site has shut down.
HOME 4 THE HOLIDAYS | Nation
Through Jan. 2, more than 2,400 animal shelters and rescue groups around the world, including 88 Indiana groups, will join PAWs for Home 4 the Holidays 2006. This international pet adoption campaign is designed to match orphaned pets with loving families so they don't spend the holidays in shelters and can avoid euthanasia. This year's goal is to send 350,000 pets to loving, permanent homes. Visit the Web site to find a list of Indiana shelters and rescue groups participating.

Allen's Landscaping Center in Highland on 45th Street will give the Humane Society Calumet Area a $5 donation for every tree purchased and a $3 donation for every decorated wreath 18 inches or larger purchased through Dec. 20. HELP NEEDED | Munster
The Humane Society Calumet Area is in need of donations, whether in the form of cash, blankets, towels, cat/dog toys, etc. due to a laundry room fire on Oct. 17. Luckily all animals and people made it out safely without injury. Estimated costs for repair are estimated between $30,000 to $50,000. With current operating costs already over $70,000 a month, the HSCA needs community support now more than ever.

All supplies help with the 200-plus animals the shelter houses on a daily basis. Grab something next time you're at the store and help out the animals.

SPECIAL NEEDS FUND | Munster
The Humane Society Calumet Area needs help with the Special Needs Fund to treat animals they could not otherwise afford to treat such as heartworm-positive dogs, injured animals and animals that have special needs. Along with this program comes the need for foster families that commit to two to six weeks of fostering an animal that needs time to recuperate or isn't old enough to be in the shelter. All of the proceeds from the microchipping program go toward the special needs fund, but they're still in need of help in building it.

The Humane Society Calumet Area is desperately seeking great foster homes for some very special and very young animals until they are old enough to be adopted. A foster care application would need to be filled out and approved and a home inspection is required. Assignments can last up to six weeks. Call for an application.

Recycling pays! The Humane Society Calumet Area has joined with Abitibi Consolidated to save the environment and fundraise at the same time. The public is invited to recycle newspaper, magazines, catalogs, envelopes, folders, copy paper and mail in the green bin outside the shelter at 421 45th St. Every time the bin is picked up, the shelter receives money to save more homeless animals.

This makes the price of a dog (over 6 months) only $50 and a puppy (younger than 6 months) for $100 or a cat (older than 6 months) $20 and a kitten (younger than 6 months) $50. Pet interaction with seniors has shown to improve life quality for both animal and owner.

BRACELETS FOR SALE | Northwest Indiana
The Independent Cat Society is selling bracelets for $3 that say "Spaying Not Slaying" to encourage people to have their pets neutered. The kitten season will be coming up in April, so now is the time to have the females spayed before hundreds more unwanted kittens are born and dumped at the doorsteps of shelters and rescue agencies. The bracelets come with an information sheet from the Humane Society that debunks the myths about neutering and shows the enormity of the problem of unfixed pets. ICS also has a low-cost spay-neuter program available through the shelter.

Awareness jelly bracelets and car magnets help fund shelter animals. The Humane Society Calumet Area is selling the bracelets for a donation of $2 each with the words "Adopt a Pet" on them. The magnetic awareness ribbons come in three exciting statements such as "Spay/Neuter," "Adoption Is the Option" and "Rescue." Magnets are $5 each and all proceeds benefit the animals.

ADOPT A GREAT DANE | Nation
Mid-Atlantic Great Dane Rescue League (MAGDRL) is a nine-state rescue that focuses on placing Danes and Dane mixes in loving homes. The group also focuses on educating people about deaf dogs, for example (see www.deafdogs.org). Not everyone with a deaf Dane is willing to put the time into training and they end up in rescue and are hard to place. MAGDRL shows owners how to handle deaf and vision-impaired Danes so they don't have to give them up.
