LAKE STATION | The reconstruction of the Riverview Park log cabin is on the fast track.
The materials for the new cabin are expected to arrive April 11. Lake Station Parks Superintendent Dewey Lemley said he plans to start construction the following week and have it completed by June. The parks already received reservations to rent the new cabin beginning June 16.
"We really have to get going with it," Lemley said.
The cabin will replace the city's original cabin, which was destroyed by arsonists about a year ago. Lemley said the new cabin will look similar to the original cabin, but will have more features.
He said the department still is seeking volunteers willing to help build the facility. Lemley said anyone can volunteer, but people with experience in trades would be especially helpful.
Initially, the department will need volunteers with experience in carpentry and roofing, Lemley said, to get the cabin under roof as soon as possible.
Lemley said construction of the new cabin will coincide with the building of the city's new archery range, which also must be completed by June.
If the department doesn't complete the facility by the June deadline, it will lose nearly $100,000 in grant money received from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources to build the archery range.
Lemley said the department is seeking a flood plain permit, which is necessary before construction can take place.
