TRY NEEDLECRAFTS | Merrilville

Try needlecrafts with the Merrillville Parks and Recreation Department from 10 a.m. to noon Mondays, starting March 31, at Pruzin Community Center, 5750 Tyler Place. Cost for six weeks is $5 for residents and $10 for nonresidents, both beginners and advanced students. Knitting, crocheting, needlepoint-plastic canvas, and tatting are included. Bring your own supplies. Call to register.

LA TEA DA | Merrillville, Gary

Tickets go on sale March 31 for Lake County Parks' "La Tea Da," a luncheon especially for Red Hat societies. Tea will be served at two locations. The first is from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 27 at Turkey Creek Banquet on the Green, 6400 Harrison St., Merrillville. The second will be from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 25 at Lake Etta Banquet Hall, 4801 W. 29th Ave., Gary. Wear your smartest bonnet to enjoy an afternoon of High Tea and Millinery History. Tickets are $15 per person and go on sale at 8:30 a.m. March 31 and will remain on sale until sold out. Call between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. weekdays to order tickets.

APPRAISAL LUNCHEON | Lowell

The Three Creeks Historical Association will hold its fourth Antique Appraisal Luncheon from noon to 4 p.m. April 5 at the First United Methodist Church, 520 E. Commercial Ave. The public is invited to bring one item to be appraised by Karl Gates, who offers an entertaining afternoon filled with information on collectibles and the guests' own special antiques. Tickets may be purchased for $25 from any association member. Doors open at 11:30 a.m. The association meets at 7 p.m. on the second Wednesday of each month at Lowell Public Library, 1505 E. Commercial Ave. The public is always welcome.

GYMNASTICS CLASSES | Merrillville

Merrillville Parks and Recreation Department sponsors Tumblebear Gymnastics classes for children, with a new four-week session on Wednesdays beginning April 9 at Pruzin Community Center, 5750 Tyler Place. The Parent/Tot program for children who can walk through age 3, with a caregiver, is from 10:30 to 11:05 a.m. and introduces equipment and gymnastics skills. The Preschool class is for ages 3 to 5 from 4:15 to 4:45 p.m., working on coordination, body awareness and self-confidence. The School Age class for ages 5 to 12 is from 4:45 to 5:30 p.m. and concentrates on gymnastics skills, hand-eye coordination, rhythms, cooperative activities and stunts. Cost is $35 per session for residents and $40 for nonresidents. Register by April 2.

PARENTS NIGHT OUT | Hobart

Enjoy a Parents Night Out from 5 to 10 p.m. April 5 and send the children to Lisa’s Gymnastics at 679 Ind. 130. Youngsters will enjoy a gymnastics class, open gym time, food, a movie and popcorn and games. Cost is $15 for one child, $25 for two and $30 for three or more.

TODDLER TIME | Wheatfield

Toddler Time for 2-year-olds, with a caregiver, will be held from 10 to 10:30 a.m. Fridays, April 4 to 25, at the Wheatfield Library, 350 S. STORY TIME | DeMotte

Babies 6 to 24 months, with a caregiver, can attend Lap-sit Story Time from 10 to 10:30 a.m. the first Thursday of every month, beginning April 3, at the DeMotte Library, 901 Birch St. SW. Music, stories, toys and fun movement activities will be included. Registration is required in person, on-line at www.jasperco.lib.in.us or by phone.

OPEN HOUSE | Lowell

Calumet Astronomical Society will host an open house from 8 to 11 p.m. April 5 at the Thomas Conway Observatory, just south of Buckley Homestead at 3606 Belshaw Road. Members of the society will answer questions about astronomy and provide visitors with an opportunity to view the planets, galaxies, and other celestial objects through binoculars and telescopes. To get to the observatory, take Hendricks Street south from Ind. 2 until the 'T' at Belshaw Road, then turn east (left) on Belshaw.  Turn south on Chase St., the first road on the right, and travel about three-quarter mile south to the Conway Observatory on the west side of Chase just past 191st Avenue.  Dress appropriately for the evening weather.  Observing with telescopes is contingent upon clear weather.

FLORAL PROGRAM | Crown Point

Crown Point Garden Club meets at 12:30 p.m. April 4 and the first Friday every month at the Crown Point Civic Center, 101 S. East St. Holly Keithley will present a program April 4 on Floral Growing and Dried Floral Arrangements. Guests are welcome. Anyone interested in participating in the Garden Walk on June 28 and 29 is welcome to contact the club.

MUSIC JAM | Roselawn

A country, gospel and bluegrass music jam will be held from 6 to 10 p.m. April 4 at Roselawn American Legion Post 238, Ind. 10 between Interstate 65 and Ind. 55 just east of the railroad tracks. Fish fry will be available from 5 to 8 p.m.. A large dance floor is available; no smoking, please.

STORY TIME | Cedar Lake

Story Time for preschoolers ages 3 to 5 from the MacArthur district is held from 2:25 to 3:25 p.m. Wednesdays and 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Thursdays during the school year at MacArthur Elementary School, 12900 Fairbanks St. The theme April 2 and 3 is "Early 4th of July." Call Sue Beck to register.

VENDORS WANTED | Crown Point

Illiana Garden Pond Society is hosting its seventh annual Garden, Pond and Patio Show on April 26 and 27 at the Lake County Fairgrounds. Booth space rentals are available at reduced rates for crafters, hobbyists, and artists who have crafts or paintings with gardening and outdoor living themes.

POPCORN BALL | Valparaiso

The Valparaiso Community Festivals & Events, Inc. will host the 30th annual Popcorn Ball April 12 at the Porter County expo Center. This year’s theme is “30 Years of Popcorn & Memories”. In honor of the 30th anniversary, “World Class Noise,” a 9-piece band from Chicago, will be performing, a special attraction to the event and only the second time since the Ball began that a live band has entertained those attending. CAMP COUNSELORS | Merrillville

Merrillville Parks and Recreation Department is seeking counselors for its summer day camp, Kid Zone 2008. Strongly preferred are students majoring in education or those with experience in early childhood development, and applicants need to be energetic, work well with children, have good time management skills and be a team player. SPRING FLING | Munster

Vendors geared toward pampering women are invited to the Ladies Spring Fling, set for 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 17 and 18 at Munster High School, 8808 Columbia Ave. Vendors include nail salons, massage therapists, beauty and healthcare products, cosmetic demonstrations, clothing, accessories and more. The booth fee is $90; electricity is available per request. It's offered by the Parks and Recreation Department.

WOODCARVING SHOW | Portage

The Duneland Woodcarvers' 32nd annual woodcarving show will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. April 5 and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 6 at Woodland Park, 2100 Willowcreek Road. The show will feature 80 carvers and vendors, original woodcarvings, demonstrations, hourly door prizes and carving supplies. Admission is $4 per person. Children younger than 12 years will be admitted free.
