STUDENT ART | Lake Station

Edison Junior-Senior High School will host the 13th annual Spring Art Exhibit from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 16 and 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. May 18 at the school, 3304 Parkside Ave. The exhibit will feature works of art by students in grades 8 through 12. The artwork will be on display in the Charlie Close (junior high) Gymnasium and admission is free. The public is encouraged to attend and support this event.

GED TESTING | Merrillville

Merrillville Adult Education GED summer test dates are May 19 & 20, June 16 & 17, July 14 & 15 and Aug. 25 & 26. This two-day test will be given from 5 to 9:30 p.m. Applications are available at 6701 Delaware St. Advance registration is required.

SUMMER CAMP | Hobart

Center for Possibilities- Cerebral Palsy of NWI, Inc. will host four, two-week camps for children 2 to 5 with developmental disabilities. Preschoolers with multiple and severe disabilities are encouraged to apply.  Each camp will provide opportunities to play, learn and grow.  The camps include the following themes: Sailin’ the Deep Blue Sea-Pirate and Mermaid Adventure, CP Ranch Camp-Rootin’ Tootin’, Boot Stompin’ Fun, Children Around the World and God’s Big Backyard Vacation Bible School. Enrollment is underway at Center for Possibilities, 22 Tyler Ave. Camps begin June 16 and run through Aug. 14.  A one-time $20 enrollment fee will be due at enrollment and includes a camp T-shirt, group photo, lunch, snacks and all supplies.  Camp fees of $40 for each two-week session will also be due at enrollment. All fees are nonrefundable. A waiting list will be created once full enrollment is reached.  A copy of the camper’s immunizations, birth certificate and a current physical will

be required. Funding support is provided by Lake Area United Way.

OPEN HOUSE | Hobart

A Grand Opening Open House will be held from noon to 4 p.m. May 17 and 18 at Bright Minds Preschool, inside Hobart Assembly of God, 7545 E. Ridge Road. There will be food and games for all and the first 20 who take a tour will receive a gift. The school will offer "kiddie kams" and will also teach basic sign language.

GARDENING CLASS | Lowell

"Build a Container Workshop" is the topic of a gardening class at 8 a.m. May 17 at Gardens on the Prairie, 3242 W. 169th Ave. Cost is $25.

BAND CONCERT | Lake Station

Edison Junior-Senior High School Band Department will present its annual Spring Concert under the direction of James Wasmundt and Bridget Fine at 2:30 p.m. May 18 at the school, 3304 Parkside Ave. Admission is $3 for adults and $2 for students. A 50/50 raffle will be held to help raise money for new instruments.

PRESCHOOL PROGRAM | Hobart

Hobart Family YMCA is accepting registration for its fall 2008-09 Developmental Preschool program at the YMCA, 601 West 40th Place. A $50 nonrefundable registration fee along with birth certificate and immunization records are requested at registration. Classes are offered in the morning and the afternoon. The 3- and 4-year-old and pre-kindergarten classes have limited openings. The program includes many components in the child’s learning experiences that stimulate a young mind and influences a lifetime of learning ability. Children learn through a variety of fun academics, social and developmental activities such as learning centers, music, arts and crafts, computers, Pre-Fit, a creative movement program, character development, swim-time, gym time, field trips and parties.

SUPER SUMMER | Hobart

Registration is being accepted for the for Super Summer Day Camp at the Hobart Family YMCA, 601 W. 40th Place. Camp begins June 9 for school-age children currently in kindergarten through grade 6. Youth who have completed sixth grade may apply for the counselor-in-training program. Applications are available at the front desk. Day camp offer a fun, safe and exciting program throughout the summer. A typical camp day includes group activities, gym time, sports, swim time, snacks, a sack lunch provided by parents, singing, gardening project, Professor Popcorn, Environmobile, games, awards, occasional field trips and special activities like mini-sport camps and art classes.

LEARN TO SWIM | Merrillville

Deep River Waterpark will offer a Learn to Swim course for children 4 to 10 that teaches swimming basics as well as water safety from 9 to 9:45 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, June 17 to July 10, or Saturdays, June 7 to July 26. Meet outside the front entrance. Cost is $40 for season pass holders and $60 for others. Pick up a registration form from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays at the water park, 9001 E. U.S. 30, or call (219) 947-7850, ext. 604 and ask for one to be mailed. Fill it out and send it back with payment to Deep River Waterpark, 9001 E. U.S. 30, Crown Point, IN 46307. Deadline is June 1 or until filled.
