Flag contest | Lansing
The Lansing Historical society invites Village of Lansing citizens of all ages to participate in a flag design contest. Research material on the village is available at the Lansing Public Library. General flag design information is available from the North American Vexillological Association Web site at http://www.nava.org. The Lansing Village Clerks office, 18200 Chicago Ave., and the Lansing Public Library, 2750 Indiana Ave., both have entry forms. Deadline for entries is May 16. The Lansing Historical Society Board will choose finalists. The final decision will be made by the Lansing village president and village board of trustees. The winner will be notified by phone and invited to a village board meeting to be recognized and receive prizes.
Birthday lunch | Chicago Heights
South Suburban Genealogical and Historical Society and Library of Hazel Crest will hold its 40th annual birthday luncheon at noon today at Carlo's Restaurant, 560 W. Lincoln Highway. Tickets are $25 per person and can be purchased by contacting the SSGHS Library. Entertainment for the birthday event will be singer Rick Pickren presenting "Illinois: Gateway to the American West in Story and Song."

Historical society | Homewood
The Homewood Historical Society's annual meeting will take place at 7:30 p.m. May 14 in the lower level of St. Paul Community Church, 18200 Dixie Highway. On the agenda for the evening will be a celebration of the successes of the past year, presentation of annual reports, installation of 2008-09 officers and a vote for volunteer of the year. A social hour and refreshments follow. The meeting is free and open to the public.

Republic Steel | Chicago
Republic Steel Retirees Club will meet May 15 at Steve's Lounge, 13200 Baltimore Ave. in Chicago's Hegewisch neighborhood. Social hour begins at 5:30 p.m. with dinner at 6:45. The Calumet Astronomical Society meets at 7:30 p.m. May 12 at the Lake County Convention and Visitors Center, 7770 Corinne Drive. The featured speaker for the evening is Darren Drake. Drake is a monthly skywatch presenter and planetarium operator for the Cernan Earth and Space Center at Triton College. The public is invited to this free program. HERB SOCIETY | Crown Point
The Lake County Herb Society meets at 1 p.m. May 13 at the Lake County Purdue Cooperative Extension Service, 880 E. 99th Court, Suite A. A silent auction will follow a discussion of the herbs calendula and arugula. Members will donate plants, crafts and gifts for the auction. The money earned will be used for speakers at society meetings. Linda Ebert, owner of LE Garden in Wheatfield, also will present a program on growing herbs. The public is welcome.

GENEALOGICAL SESSION | Merrillville
The Northwest Indiana Genealogical Society meets from 10 a.m. to noon May 17 at the Lake County Public Library, 1919 W. 81st Ave. This month's topic is tips and tricks for Cook County, Ill., vital records by Grace DuMelle. She will talk about alternative methods for finding birth, marriages, divorces and deaths in the second largest county in the United States - Cook County. The group will learn about hidden sources such as out-of-state indexes and records created after the fact. Meetings are free and open to the public, and everyone is welcome.

SPRING FLING | Munster
Arts and craft fair vendors and area and home business vendors are sought for Ladies Spring Flight in May at Munster High School, 8808 Columbia Ave. Show hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 17 and 18. All arts, crafts and businesses that hand make or sell products of interest to ladies may apply. The fee is $90 per 10-by-10 booth space for the two days. Applications may be submitted to the Munster Parks and Recreation Department at Town Hall, 1005 Ridge Road.

PET EXPO | Crown Point
Representatives of the Humane Society of Northwest Indiana will participate in the Lake County Pet Expo from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. today at the Industrial Building of the Lake County Fairgrounds. Admission is $2 per person or $5 per family. Some of the features include rescues, vendors, a pet photographer, training and agility demonstrations, a pet psychic and a veterinarian available to answer questions. Friendly dogs on leashes are welcome.
