Installation dinner | Lansing

Join the Lansing Historical Society for its 2008-09 installation dinner at 6 p.m. May 19 at the Knights of Columbus, 178th Street and Burnham Avenue. Price per person is $25, mailed to the Lansing Historical Society, P.O. Box 1776, Lansing, IL 60438. RSVP by May 14.

Casino trip | Calumet City

Join the Calumet Memorial Park District at Blue Chip Casino on June 30. The coach bus will depart at 8:30 a.m. and return by 4:30 p.m. Attendees must be 21 and older. The fee is $15 per person, and includes a $10 lunch voucher plus $10 in E-play for every 1,500 points earned. Registration is required and is now being taken at the Memorial Park Recreation Office, 612 Wentworth Ave.

Listening session | South Holland

South Suburban College will be the site of an Illinois Works Coalition Listening Session from 6 to 7:30 tonight in the Performing Arts Center. The public is encouraged to attend this informative session and share their concerns. South Suburban College is at 15800 S. State St.

Flag contest | Lansing

The Lansing Historical society invites Village of Lansing citizens of all ages to participate in a flag design contest. Research material on the village is available at the Lansing Public Library. General flag design information is available from the North American Vexillological Association Web site at http://www.nava.org. The Lansing Village Clerks office, 18200 Chicago Ave., and the Lansing Public Library, 2750 Indiana Ave., both have entry forms. Deadline for entries is May 16. The Lansing Historical Society Board will choose finalists. The final decision will be made by the Lansing village president and village board of trustees. The winner will be notified by phone and invited to a village board meeting to be recognized and receive prizes. 

Job fair | South Holland

South Suburban College and Thornton Township are partnering to offer a 2008 Community Job Fair from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 21.  Several municipalities are co-sponsoring the event including Burnham, Calumet City, Dixmoor, Harvey, Hazel Crest, Lansing, Markham, Phoenix, Riverdale and South Holland, along with United Parcel Service. All job seekers are welcome to attend free.

Wine tasting | Lansing

Tickets are now available for the Friends of the Lansing Public Library's wine tasting event, taking place from 6:30 to 9 p.m. June 27 at the library, 2750 Indiana Ave. Tickets cost $20 and are available through Adult Services Department. There will be wine tasting, appetizers and guitar music.

Children's Book Week | Lansing

Lansing Public Library will host Children's Book Week at 6:30 p.m. May 14. Children of all ages and their parents are invited to this special evening children's storytime. No sign-up is necessary. The library is at 2750 Indiana Ave.

Historical society | Homewood

The Homewood Historical Society's annual meeting will take place at 7:30 p.m. May 14 in the lower level of St. Paul Community Church, 18200 Dixie Highway. On the agenda for the evening will be a celebration of the successes of the past year, presentation of annual reports, installation of 2008-09 officers and a vote for volunteer of the year. A social hour and refreshments follow. The meeting is free and open to the public.

Karate | Calumet City

The next session of Wado-Ki Karate for ages 4 through adult will be from 5:45 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesdays, May 14 to July 16. The fee is $35 for residents, $40 for nonresidents. Registration is now being taken at the Memorial Park Recreation Office, 612 Wentworth Ave.

Bingo | Chicago

St. Florian School will have two more bingos this school year. Doors open at 1:30 p.m. May 18 and June 1 at the St. Florian Gym at 131st and Houston Avenue in Chicago's Hegewisch neighborhood. Games start at 2:30 p.m.

Track, field | Calumet City

The Hershey's Track & Field Games for ages 9 to 14 will be held at 4 p.m. May 21 at Thornton Fractional North High School, 755 Pulaski Ave. Participants may register with their school physical education teachers or the day of the event. Winners will advance to district competition in June, and may go all the way to the nationals in Pennsylvania.

Ten Penny Carnival | Lansing

The 58th annual Lansing-Lynwood Girl Scouts 10 Penny Carnival is from noon to 3 p.m. May 17 at the Lan-Oak Park Pavilion, 180th and Oakley Avenue. There will be food, refreshments, a bake sale, games and more. The public is welcome. All games cost 10 cents a try.

Walk-a-thon | Lansing

LARC will hold its fifth annual walk-a-thon and dinner on May 17. Registration will start at 1 p.m. with the walk beginning at 2 p.m. After the walk a dinner will be served by Popolano’s Restaurant of Lansing. Costs are $15 to walk and for dinner and $10 for just dinner. LARC T-shirts will be available for $10 and a small quantity of walk-a-thon T-shirts will be available the day of the walk. Also this year, a client's family has created a children’s book that tells the story of the walk-a-thon titled "Tank the Turtle." Author Dawn Pederson and illustrator Tanya Pederson will be on hand to autographed copies of their book and Tank himself will be there to have pictures taken with participants. All funds raised at the walk-a-thon and all other LARC fundraisers are used completely for the continued support of the efforts to serve the developmentally disabled.

POKER RUN | Hammond

The third annual Joe. B. Memorial Poker Run and Block Party will take place May 17. It's sponsored by The Cavalier Inn and the American Veterans Motorcycle Riders Association, Chapter 1 in Hammond. Riders should sign up at Cavalier Inn, 735 Gostlin St. Fees are $20 for single riders and $30 for doubles. The first bike leaves at 11 a.m. with the last bike in at 4 p.m. A moonwalk, bean bag tournament, 50/50 raffles, motorcycle rodeo, food and drinks will be available. Music will be provided by DJ TK Digital. Bands performing include The Bed Bugs and& Between The Covers. Proceed benefit: JJ Golub, a 16-year-old sophomore at Highland High School. On Nov. 13, he was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer. He is recovering from surgery and undergoing chemotherapy. Donations are welcome.

MEATLOAF DINNER | St. John

St. John Ladies Auxiliary Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 717 will host a meatloaf dinner from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. May 14 at the post, 10400 W. 93rd Ave. Dinner includes meatloaf, salad, mashed potatoes, dessert and coffee, tea or milk for $7 for adults and $4 for children younger than 12.

GRANDMOTHERS CLUB | Highland

  Highland Grandmothers Club hosts its May luncheon May 15 at the Carmelite Banquet Hall, 1628 Ridge Road. Luncheon will be served at noon. Guests are welcome. The annual card and bunco party will be hosted by the Highland Grandmothers at 1 p.m. May 18. Tickets cost $5 per person and will not be sold at the door. Proceeds benefit the children's cancer fund.

FISH FRY | Hammond

The annual fish fry hosted by First United Methodist Church in Hammond is 5 to 7 p.m. May 17 at 6635 Hohman Ave. Ocean perch, baked potato, cole slaw, green beans, rolls, dessert and coffee or lemonade are included in the dinner. A children's menu will be available. Dinners cost $9 for adults and $4.50 for children 4 to 12 years old. Advance ticket purchases are appreciated.

PARISH DANCE | Munster

Our Lady of Grace Parish of Highland honors its parishioners and alumni with a Mass and dinner dance May 24. Mass is at 4:30 p.m. and dinner and dancing will be at 6 p.m. at the Center for Visual and Performing Arts, 1040 Ridge Road. Tickets cost $40 per person and may be bought at the school office. Our Lady of Grace is especially honoring the class of 1958 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of graduation from school. In addition, the classes of 1968, 1978, 1988, and 1998 will be celebrated.

Especially for Me | Steger

A story time series tailored to children with special needs is at 3 p.m. May 22 at Steger-South Chicago Heights Public Library, 54 E. 31st St. Ages 3 to 5 can attend the 45-minute program of songs, rhymes, finger plays, movement activities and simple crafts. Register.

BREAKFAST BUFFET | Hammond

St. Mary's Altar and Rosary Society presents an all-you-can-eat breakfast from 8:30 a.m. to noon May 18 at the church dining room, 937 Merrill St. The breakfast includes pancakes, sausage, bacon, egg casserole, oatmeal, fruit, juice, coffee or tea and dessert. Cost is $4 for children 5 and older and $8 for adults.

YARD SALE, CAR WASH | Highland

A huge yard sale, bake sale and car wash will be held from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 17 at Suburban Bible Church, 3010 41st St. All proceeds will be used to support Suburban's two summer mission teams. One team of 40 will work with Rio Bravo Ministries June 20 to 26 in Renosya, Mexico, and another 50-member team will work with three different Chicago ministries June 30 to July 3.

BAKE, RUMMAGE SALE | Griffith

Bake sale and rummage sale is 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 16 and 17 at Griffith Church of God, 630 N. Jay St. There will be hot dogs, chili dogs, chips and soft drinks. Spaces that are 10-by-10 can be rented for $10 per day.
