MOTORCYCLE SHOW | Merrillville

VFW Post 1563 Motorcycle Riders Association will sponsor a Motorcycle Show from noon to 4 p.m. June 29 at VFW Post 1583, 6880 Hendricks St. All bikes are welcome for food, raffles, vendors, live music by Zodiac and trophies. Entry fee is $10. All proceeds will aid veterans and their families. donations of door prizes, food and cash are welcome. Checks should be made payable to VFW Post 1563 MRA and can be picked up by a member. Vendor booths are also welcome.

MUSICAL BENEFIT | Merrillville

The July 19 performance of the Broadway musical "Chicago" at the Star Plaza Theatre will be a benefit for St. Jude House. Opening night for this Tony Award winning show, first staged on Broadway in 1975, will raise funds for programming at the Crown Point shelter for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. The shelter provides all services, including food, clothing, advocacy, education, and legal support at no charge to those needing assistance.

Tickets for the July 19 show, priced at $25 and $20, are available at Star Plaza Theatre Box Office, Ticket Master or St. Jude House. A raffle for items with a Chicago theme will be offered during intermission. Sponsors are also welcome.

GIVING CIRCLE | Crown Point

Crown Point Community Foundation Inc. is accepting applications for scholarship awards specifically designed for women and made possible through the Women’s Giving Circle Fund. More than 95 women contribute annually to the foundation's philanthropic causes. This award is available to all women continuing their education beyond high school and can be applied toward vocational or academic studies, for undergraduate or graduate studies. Recipients must be female Crown Point residents, 21 or older, who are high school of GED graduates.

Obtain a scholarship application at the foundation office, 213 S. Court St., or by calling (219) 662-7252. Completed applications must be post marked no later than July 11 and submitted to: Crown Point Community Foundation, P.O. Box 522, Crown Point, In 46308.

SUMMER FEST | Lake Station

American Legion Post 100 will host a Summer Fest to benefit the Lake Station Little League and the Lake Station Boys and Girls Club from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. June 29 in its parking lot at 1899 Central Ave. Festivities include a rummage sale from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., car wash, barbecue, and a beer garden. There will be a party jumper for the kids, a deejay all day, 50/50 raffles, and a raffle for a Nintendo WII. To donate to the rummage sale, call or drop off items at 727 Central Ave. or 4700 Central Ave.

REBUILDING TOGETHER | Lowell

Rebuilding Together of South Lake County is currently accepting applications for eligible homes in Lowell.  Skilled and unskilled volunteers - supported by cash and material contributions from local businesses and individuals - will rehab and repair at least 10 homes in Lowell on Sept. 13.In order to be considered, residents must own their own home and meet certain income criteria. Applications are available at the Lowell Town Hall, 501 E. Main St., or by phone by contacting Board President Tim Brown, at (219) 769-5711. Completed applications are to be returned by mail to: Rebuilding Together of South Lake County at P.O. Box 665, Crown Point, IN 46308.  The deadline for submitting an application is June 30. Local businesses, service clubs and organizations are encouraged to sponsor an individual home by providing both financial support and volunteers for the event.  Monetary donations may be sent to Rebuilding Together of South Lake County at the above address.

SUMMER MEALS | Merrillville

Merrillville Community School Corporation is participating in the state Summer Food Service Program.  Meals will be provided to all children 18 and under without charge.  Acceptance and participation requirements for the program and all activities are the same for all regardless of race, color, national origin, sex, age or disability, and there will be no discrimination in the course of the meal service.  Breakfast will be provided from 8 to 9 a.m. and lunch from 11:30 to 12:30 p.m. Monday through Friday now through July 3 and July 7 through Aug. 15, at Fieler Elementary School,  1407 W. 61st Ave.; Iddings Elementary School, 7249 Van Buren St.; Miller Elementary School, 5901 Waite St.; Salk Elementary School, 3001 W. 77th Ave.; Pierce Middle School, 99 E. 70th Place, and Pruzin Community Center, 5750 Tyler Place.

BLOOD DRIVE | Crown Point

An American Red Cross blood drive will be held on Saturday, June 28 from 9 a.m. to l p.m June 28 at New Life Church, 1400 E. Joliet St. A positive ID is required.  Walk-ins are always welcome.  All donors will be entered in a drawing for a grill package worth $1,250.

CARNIVAL & CRAFTS | Valparaiso

A Carnival & Craft Fair to benefit the Alzheimer's Association will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 28 at Clare Bridge, 2501 Valparaiso St. There will be food, face painting, carnival games, a Moonwalk and vendors selling crafts and food.  All proceeds will go to the facility's Alzheimer’s Association Memory Walk team.

BIKE RUN | Valparaiso

Supporters of the Military group is sponsoring a Bike Run for the Troops on from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 28

and collecting donations to be sent to U.S. military troops overseas. Donations may be nonperishable items and paper products. The group packs boxes every three months to send overseas.  Also, drop off names and addresses of soldiers to receive packages. Donations can be made at Harley Davidson of Valparaiso, 1151 U.S. 30.

HOUSES REHABBED | Hobart, Lake Station

Through the generous donations of businesses and individuals and e hard work for more than 350 volunteers, improvements were completed to 13 houses during this year's Rebuilding Together with Christmas in April project in Hobart and Lake Station. Projects ranged from raking leaves to installing new windows and doors, all with the objective of making the homes warm, safe and dry. The Board of Directors, led by President Tom Ledyard and Vice President Cindy Lahaie, expressed appreciation to everyone who contributed to the success of this year's project.

GRIEF SUPPORT | Highland

Wounded Healers grief support program presents Steven Conger, pastor of Ridge United Methodist Church in Munster, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. July 2 at the St. James Church Hall, 45th and Kennedy Avenue. He will share his practical, personal and spiritual insight on seeking inner strength during a difficult time. There is no charge to attend. The public is welcome and there is no charge.

BUTTERFLY TIME | Merrillville

Children in kindergarten through grade 4 will hear stories about caterpillars and their change into butterflies at 10 a.m. or 2 p.m. July 1 at the Lake County Public Library, 1919 W. U.S. 30. They will also make a fluttery craft. Call to register.

CANCER PATIENT | Lynwood

Duane A. Loepker Cancer Benefit is set for 5 to 10 p.m. June 28 at Al's Tap, 21916 Lincoln Highway, one-eighth of a mile west of St. Margaret Mercy Healthcare Centers in Dyer. The donation of $10 at the door includes beer, food and music. Loepker, a Dyer resident, recently was diagnosed with inoperable lung cancer that already is spreading to other organs. He is undergoing chemotherapy. He and his wife, Judy, have three teenage sons: Adam, Zach and Ryan. The benefit is designed to raise money and to raise awareness about lunch cancer.

ICE CREAM SOCIAL | Portage

The Independent Veterans Society of Indiana will hold an ice cream social from 4 to 8 p.m. July 1 at Portage Culver's, 6139 U.S. 6. Ask for IVSI sundae to support the nonprofit organization that helps veterans who are dealing with post-traumatic stress syndrome and traumatic brain injuries and their families.

HOSPICE TRAINING | Munster

Hospice of the Calumet Area is seeking volunteers from across Northwest Indiana and neighboring Illinois communities to serve as companions for patients and families facing end-of-life illnesses. Training for new patient companion volunteers is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 12, 5:45 to 8 p.m. July 23 and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 26 at Kish Funeral Home, 1000 Calumet Ave. Call to register.
