FIREFIGHTERS DANCE | Griffith

The Griffith Fire Department hosts a firefighters dance and raffle from 6 p.m. to midnight July 26 at the Griffith Central Fire Station, 130 N. Lafayette St. Lots of door prizes have been donated by area businesses to be raffled as well as a $1,000 grand prize. Firefighters will serve up food and drink, with musical guest Nick Danger will play favorite songs. Tickets can be bought in advance or at the door and cost $2.50, which includes admission to the dance and entry in the cash raffle. All proceeds will go directly to the all-volunteer department and will be used to maintain community fire prevention and safety programs and to buy life-saving equipment.

PARISH FEST | Highland

St. James Parish Fest is 6 p.m. to midnight today and 5 p.m. to midnight July 19 at 45th and Kennedy avenues. A silent auction for various items is both days, as well as kids' games and inflatables, homemade food, elephant ears, a beer garden and live entertainment. Nick Danger performs 7 to 11 tonight and High Noon performs 7 to 11 p.m. July 19. A cash raffle with $10,000 in prizes is available; the drawing is 10 p.m. July 19. Casino night with free admission is available both nights; participants must be 21 years old.

BAKE SALE | Hammond

A yard sale and bake sale are planned 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 19 at Hessville Bible Church, 6518 Grand Blvd. Lots of miscellaneous items will be sold. Proceeds will be used for two heaters for the church to help lower heating costs.

LOG CABIN BREAKFAST | Schererville

Applebee's in Schererville will dish up a breakfast of pancakes, sausage or bacon and beverages July 19 to raise money to restore the 1847 Hilbrich Log Cabin. Seatings are from 8 to 9 a.m. and 9 to 10 a.m. Tickets cost $7 and need to be bought in advance at the Schererville clerk-treasurer's office or by calling the Parks and Recreation Department.

SPLASH PAD DAY | Highland

North Township Trustee Frank Mrvan and Wicker Memorial Park offer free splash pad days for children with disabilities. Youths may play at the splash park from 9 to 11 a.m., 11:30 to 1:30 p.m. 2 to 4 p.m. or 4:40 to 6:30 p.m. July 23 and Aug. 5 at the park, Indianapolis Boulevard and Ridge Road.

GARAGE SALE | Hammond

A huge garage sale will be held by Christopher, Vikki, and Jerry Mize from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 26 at 6702 Ohio Ave., with all proceeds going to this year's Alzheimer’s Memory Walk. Baby clothes, collectables, Longaberger baskets, Birkenstock sandals, Precious Moments and Boyd’s Bear figurines, books, toys, CD’s, albums, clothes, and household items. The Alzheimer’s Association’s annual Memory Walk will take place Sept. 20 at Hidden Lake Park, 6355 Broadway in Merrillville.

OPEN MIC | Hammond

Adults who sing, play an instrument, or recite poetry may perform in front of their peers at the Hammond Public Library's Adult Open Mic. The program is at 6 p.m. July 22 at the main library, 564 State St. A signup sheet is posted outside the Community Room at 5:30 p.m.

STAMPING CLASS | Schererville

The Schererville Parks Department offers a stamping class for adults from 6:30 to 8;30 p.m. July 22 at Town Hall, 10 E. Joliet St. The class will be instructed by Melissa Sullivan. Participants will complete three projects. The fee is $6 for residents and $7 for nonresidents. Sign up at the clerk-treasurer's office.

SPAYING, NEUTERING | Gary

The Humane Society Northwest Indiana has a low cost spay/neuter day July 23 at 6100 Melton Road. The price for dogs is $55 and cats are $35. All animals must be current on their rabies vaccine, if they are not, there is a $15 additional fee for the vaccine. Appointments must be made; space is limited.

PIT STOP EVENT | Crown Point

Make a "pit stop" from 4 to 8 p.m. July 24 at Beef O'Brady's, 107th and Broadway, and 15 percent of total sales will be donated to the Nathan C. Splant Foundation benefitting local children and families. The foundation was established in 2007 as a public charity offering assistance and grants to local families in need.

ARMCHAIR TRAVELERS | Highland

Armchair Travelers will feature Washington, D.C., at 2 and 6:30 p.m. July 21 at the Lake County Public Library's Highland branch, 2841 Jewett St. Via video, visit the nation's capital, the first planned city and the country's grandest repository of museums, monuments and memorials. Refreshments will be served. Register.

CALLING ALL BRICKIES | Hobart

All Hobart Brickie football letter winners and guests are invited to the first Hobart Football Hall of Fame Banquet at 6 tonight at the Ambassador Banquet Hall on U.S. 6. Cost is $55 per person, which includes an open bar. The induction ceremony will begin at 8:15 p.m. Former players can introduce themselves, years played, honors won and collegiate career and can tour the new Hobart High School and new Brickie Bowl before the banquet. The 1987, 1989, 1991 and 1993 state championship teams will be recognized as well as inductees.

MYSTERY DISCUSSION | Highland

A discussion is set for 7 p.m. July 24 at the Lake County Public Library's Highland branch, 2841 Jewett St. "Red, White & Blue Murder" is the second title in Jeanne Dam's mystery series featuring Hilda Johansson, a resourceful Swedish housemaid in the Studebaker home in South Bend, Ind. Here Hilda is determined to clear her friend's brother of the murder of a prominent local builder. Refreshments will be served. Sign up in advance.

CAR SHOW | Crown Point

Road Hog Corvette Club presents its third annual Road Hog Car Show July 19 at Buddy and Pals, on Randolph Street, just north of 109th Avenue. Registration, which costs $15, is from noon to 4 p.m., with the show starting at 1 p.m. Trophies and awards will be given out at 6 p.m. All Corvettes, street rods, trucks and U.S. muscle cars are welcome; no imports. A beer garden, food and music will be available throughout the event.

Northwest Indiana World Trade Council will tour the Task Force Tips - South Plant production facility at 4 p.m. July 30 at 2351 Industrial Drive, just south of the Porter County Municipal Airport. RSVP by July 22. See a state-of-the-art production facility that manufactures firefighting hose nozzles and exports to 30 foreign countries as well as across the U.S.

Ants Are Everywhere! is the title of a program at 2 p.m. July 22 at the Lake County Public Library's Black Oak branch, 5921 W. 25th Ave. Preschoolers 3 to 5 years old will hear stories about ants and draw a special ant picture. Register.
