CROWN POINT | Local insurance agent Kenneth M. Thames is dedicated to protecting the children of his community. At a recent “Kids’ Corner” held at Temple of Praise, Church of God in Christ, Thames personally offered child safety advice to the parents of 32 community youth.
“At Thames Insurance Services, we are more concerned about protecting your overall lifestyle than protecting just your property,” Thames said. “Your property is just a piece of the puzzle that we protect, but most people would give up all they have in order to recover a missing child. We want to focus on protecting your family and then on protecting your property.”
Thames concluded the session by passing out more than 50 child identification cards, in which parents can record all kinds of information about their children: name, height, weight, hair and eye color, fingerprints and most importantly, a color photo. One in seven missing children is found because of a photograph distributed by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC), making a standardized, current photograph the single most important tool in finding missing children.
“The most critical time after a child comes up missing is the first few hours. And during that time most parents are so frantic that they can’t remember the most important information to give to the authorities to help retrieve their child,” Thames said. “If you’re able to hand them a card, which is updated every six months, with your child’s information and picture on it that tells them everything they need to know about your child, they can get the word out in a matter of minutes instead of trying to pull out a description from you while you’re worried about your child.”
