Outdoor worship | Hammond
The First United Methodist Church of Hammond will have its annual outdoor worship service at 10:30 a.m. Aug. 24 at the church, 6635 Hohman Ave. Guests can bring a lawn chair and carry in dinner. The men of the church will grill hot dogs and hamburgers to accompany the food. A praise team, contemporary Christian music performed by the youth and old favorite hymns will be featured. Following the lunch, there will be pony rides, bounce house and pinatas for children.

American Legion Post 485 will have a corn boil from noon to dusk Aug. 24 at 7485 Burr St. The public is invited and it costs $3 per person for brats, dogs and burgers. Proceeds will go to fund veterans projects.

Free concert | Dyer
Dyer Parks and Recreation and Centier Bank have been co-sponsoring a free summer concert series. SUNDAY SCHOOL KICKOFF | Munster
Westminster Presbyterian Church invites the public to a back to school kickoff and picnic Aug. 24 at 8955 Columbia Ave. The event starts with a program during worship services at 9 and 10:30 a.m. to kick off the 2008-09 curriculum for children and youth of the church. The youngsters will leave worship for fellowship with their teachers and friends. Families are then invited for a picnic with hot dogs and a giant bouncy house from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tickets are not required.

FALL GOLF LEAGUE | Cedar Lake
Lake County Parks and Recreation Department will host a non-instructive, noncompetitive Junior Golf League this fall for ages 5 to 17 at Cedar Creek Family Golf Center, 10483 W. 109th Ave. Youths will play nine holes on Wednesdays, Sept. 3 through Oct. 22, with tee times beginning at 4 p.m. Cost is $40 for ages 5 to 9 (parents must stay on the property) and $60 for ages 10 to 17. Experienced golfers only, with proper etiquette and knowledge of the game required. Golfers must have own clubs, balls and water bottles. Register by first day of play.

VETERANS BENEFIT | Highland
The Independent Veterans Society of Indiana holds its first golf outing Aug. 30 at Wicker Park Golf Course, 8554 Indianapolis Blvd. Registration is at 8 a.m., with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. The cost is $100 per golfer, which includes lunch, dinner, drink tickets and door prizes. Independent Veterans Society of Indiana is a nonprofit organization that helps with assistance, guidance, information and group support for veterans and their families on a 24-hour, seven-day-a-week basis.

AUTISM TOPIC | Merrillville
"View Autism Spectrum Disorders Through a Sensory-Motor Perspective" is the topic for this month's meeting of the Northwest Indiana Chapter of the National Autism Association. The 22nd annual golf outing to benefit the Boys & Girls Clubs of Northwest Indiana will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Aug. 25 at White Hawk Country Club, 1001 White Hawk Drive off Summit Street. A four-person scramble format is followed by a social event featuring hearty hors d'oeuvres. Cost is $200 per golfer; hole sponsorships are also available. Join a free informational and interactive session from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Aug. 29 at the Lake County Public Library, 1919 W. U.S. 30, that will focus on understanding the disease process of progressive dementias such as Alzheimer’s disease. This monthly presentation should be attended prior to taking the advanced dementia class. A free monthly informational and interactive session will focus on advanced topics with regard to caring for individuals with progressive dementia from noon to 1:30 p.m. Aug. 29 at the library. Topics will include such things as handling behavior/communication changes, assisting with activities of daily living (bathing, dressing, etc.), planning of activities, and addressing difficult transitions (i.e., loss of driving privileges).
