GOLF OUTING | Hobart
The second St. Bridget Catholic School golf outing will begin with an 8 a.m. shotgun start
Sept. 6 at Duck Creek Golf Course, 638 N. 700 West. Cost is $50 for golf fee, use of cart, lunch and more. Prizes for longest drive, closest to the pin, longest putt and voluntary skins game. Reservations due by Sept. 5.

A NIGHT OF BLUES | Valparaiso
The Memorial Opera House presents a night of blues music at 7 p.m. Sept. 12. On stage that night will be Donald Kinsey, Planetary Blues and the Energy Commission. PORK FEST KICK OFF | Kouts
Kick off the Pork Fest from 6 to 9 p.m. Aug. 22 with the 6th annual Music in the Park(ing lot). GYMNASTICS CLASSES
Enrollment for general gymnastics classes at Valparaiso High School will be from 5:30 to 6 p.m. Aug. 26 in the fieldhouse. Classes for students age 5 and older will be held at 5:30 or 6:30 p.m. Mondays or Tuesdays. The session of 7 classes has a fee of $35 and will run from Sept. 2 through Oct. 28.

FISH, CHICKEN FRY | Union Twp.
wheeler High School will hold a back to school fish and chicken fry from 4 to 7 p.m. Aug. 22 in the high school cafeteria right before the Highland/Wheeler football game. Tickets are $9 for adults, $8 for senior citizens and $7 for kids younger than age 12.

The Valparaiso Lions Club has Golden Opportunity Books for sale for $25. The books have coupons for dining, entertainment and more. Proceeds will be used to improve the lives of vision-impaired residents and other projects.

Discovery Toys party
Join OE Runners, staff, friends and family of Opportunity Enterprises at 7 p.m. Aug. 21 for Discovery Toy Party. Nici Moorehead, a marathon runner for Opportunity Enterprises, is the host for this special fundraising event. The party is open to the public and OE will receive 20% of all sales up to $249, or 25% of sales over $250. In addition, $5 will also be donated for each person who pre-registers for the party. Opportunity Enterprises is located at 2801 Evans Ave., and the party will be held in the Training Room, on the north side of the building.

BARBECUE CHICKEN | Valparaiso
The Valparaiso Noon Kiwanis Club will hold a barbecue chicken dinner from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Sept. 4 at the Popcorn Fest Tent behind City Hall. The complete dinner is $8 if purchased in advance or $9 at the door. Tickets may be obtained from any Valparaiso Noon Kiwanis Club member. The Valparaiso Branch of American Association of University Women Literature Study Group meets at 7 p.m. Aug. 25 at the Valparaiso Public Library. FREE BIKE PARKING | Valparaiso
The Valparaiso Pathways Committee is offering free, supervised bicycle parking on Popcorn Festival day, Sept. 6, at Trinity Lutheran Church, 210 Washington St. Riders can park their bikes any time from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the designated lot. Committee members will supervise the bike lot but suggest that riders bring their own bike locks.
PRESCHOOL OPEN HOUSE
The Presbyterian Weekday Nursery School has openings in their 3-4 year old classes. There will be an Open House from 6:30 to 7:45 p.m. Aug. 21 at First Presbyterian Church of Valparaiso (corner of Valparaiso St. and Bullseye Lake Rd.). Prospective families can visit the classrooms, meet the teachers, see samples of class projects and activities, and register for fall classes. Children should be three by September 1, and classes begin on August 28.

POPCORN PANIC | Valparaiso
The Valparaiso Department of Parks and Recreation is accepting registration for the 2008 Popcorn Panic 5-Mile run and 5K Walk, which will be held at 7:30 a.m. Sept. 6. The fee for registration is $20.00 per person and the last day to pre-register is at noon Sept. 4. Friday night and same-day registration will be accepted for $25 per person. Participants are invited to pre-register at the Valparaiso Park Department Administration Office, 3210 Campbell St., or by telephone using a Visa, MasterCard or Discover at (219) 462-5144. Kidstop registration
Registration for Kidstop, the before and after school program operated by the Boys & Girls Clubs of Porter County, is now open. Registrations will be accepted Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Valparaiso Club, and 6:30 to 11 a.m. and again from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. at the South Haven Club.
Kidstop serves children entering kindergarten through fifth grade at the following elementary schools and Boys & Girls Clubs: Northview, Memorial, Flint Lake, Parkview, Central, Thomas Jefferson, John Simatovich, and Union Center. An afternoon program for kindergartners is available at the Valparaiso Club. Services for children attending South Haven Elementary and Paul Saylor are available at the South Haven Club.

The porter County Chapter of Ducks Unlimited will host its annual Sponsor Appreciation Hog and Corn Roast Aug. 23 at the Porter County Conservation Club. the event begins at 4 p.m. and will feature a silent auction of Ducks Unlimited merchandise including an entry into the Big 5 raffle. There will also be raffles and door prizes. Dinner will feature roast hog and corn on the cob. There will be many wild game and fish appetizers served throughout the evening. GREEK FEST | Valparaiso
St. Iakovos Greek Church will hold its annual Greek Fest from 11 a.m.m to 10 p.m. Aug. 23 and 24 at the Porter County Expo center. It will feature shish-ka-bob, lamb, Greek chicken and gyros dinners along with Greek sausage and other Greek foods. there will be a Greek bakery and a live Greek band. admission is free. All proceeds benefit the Church Building Fund.

NORTHWEST INDIANA PAGAN PRIDE DAY | Portage
Local pagans, followers of nature- or earth-centered pre-Christian religions, will gather from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 23 at Woodland Park, 2100 Willowcreek Road, for a day of faith and festivities. The festival includes vendors, information booths, workshops, children's events, a food drive to benefit the greater community and a harvest ritual. Admission to the festival is free. The public is invited. Donations of nonperishable items for the food drive will be accepted. The Northwest Indiana festival is organized by Portage Pagan Pride, Inc., the Northwest Indiana Pagan Association and Wolves Den, and is part of the international Pagan Pride Project. Portage Pagan Pride, Inc., founded in 2008, is a local chapter of the international Pagan Pride Project. The Pagan Pride Project, founded in 1998, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the advancement of religion and elimination of prejudice and discrimination based on religious beliefs.

Jazz and silent auction
St. Agnes Adult Day Service Center will host a jazz and silent auction from 2 to 6 p.m. Aug. 24 at St. Pat's Trinity Hall. Food is being donated by Don Quijote, Old Style Inn, Popolano's and Fast Coffee, Tea & Dessert Company. Tickets are on sale now for $25 per person and there will be a cash bar. The afternoon will feature the Red Rose Ragtime Jazz Band, a 7-piece group, from Chicago. FIRE AUXILIARY COOKBOOK | South Haven
South Haven Fire Department Auxiliary has cookbooks featuring a collection of recipes from group members, family and friends available for sale. The cookbooks sell for $10, plus $4 for shipping and handling. They may be purchased from any member of the auxiliary or at South Haven Fire Department, 398 W. County Road 700 North. All proceeds will go to South Haven Fire Department Auxiliary and the community and department events the group sponsors throughout the year. The cookbook contains 200 well-loved recipes, including appetizers, main dishes and desserts.

POKER RUN | Michigan City
"Ride To Cure Lupus," a poker run to benefit the Lupus Foundation of America, Inc., will be Aug. 30. The cost is $10 for the driver and $15 for driver and passenger. T-shirts and tanks cost $10. The poker run will start with registration between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. at Michigan City Harley, 2968 N. U.S. 421. The five stops on the poker run include Joe's Bar, 2958 W. U.S. 12, Michigan City; Leroy's Hot Stuff, 333 W. U.S. 20, Porter; Ruthie's Central Lounge, 3425 Central Ave., Lake Station; WoJo's Saloon, 391-1 W. WALK FOR LUPUS NOW | Hobart
The Lupus Foundation of America, Indiana chapter, presents Walk for Lupus Now on Sept. 23 at Festival Park, 111 E. Old Ridge Road. The annual fundraising walk has been held for the past seven years to support chapter programs and to create lupus awareness. In 2007, the walk raised $26,000.

DANCE FUNDRAISER | Portage
Kidworks, LLC, a developmental intervention center in Chesterton that specializes in providing physical, occupational, speech and music therapy to children with special needs, will hold a fundraiser dinner-dance Aug. 23 at Woodland Park, 2100 Willowcreek Road. The event will begin at 6 p.m. with cocktails, followed by dinner at 7 p.m. and dancing at 8 p.m. The cost is $75 per couple and $40 per individual. This event is for adults, only. The event also includes a silent auction, raffle and cash bar. Proceeds will go toward providing therapy services for low-income and uninsured children.
