KIWANIS ROUND UP | Merrillville

Merrillville Noon Kiwanis will host its annual Round Up at its meeting from noon to 1 p.m. Aug. 28 at the Old Country Buffet, 1634 E 80th Ave. Club members bring family, friends or co-workers to this special meeting. The Round Up occurs just prior to the Kiwanis's fall peanut sales, when members from area clubs can be seen outside various retailers throughout Lake and Porter counties handing out packets of peanuts for donations. Anyone interested in more information about peanut sales or to preorder cases of peanuts can call President Barb Koby at (219) 613-0727. An order form is available online at www.goiim.com/peanut_order.htm. Cases are $35 each or three for $100. Additional discount pricing is available for bulk orders.

ELKFEST | Hobart

BPO Elks Lodge 1152 will host its 25th annual Elkfest from 2 to 11 p.m. Aug. 23 and 24 at the lodge hall, 3580 W. 61st Ave. Menu both days includes BBQ lamb, fried chicken and spaghetti, with the dining room open 2-8 Saturday and 11 a.m. to 8 Sunday. Bake sale, casino, bingo, food tent with burgers, hot dogs, sausage and soft drinks, beer garden and music by Hit & Run. A Texas Hold 'Em Tournament will begin at noon Aug. 23; buy in is $100 with one $50 re-buy and 200 extra chips for those who register in advance.

GOLF OUTING | Cedar Lake

Cedar Lake Chamber of Commerce Golf Outing will be held Aug. 24 at South Shore Country Club, 14400 Lake Shore Drive. Registration begins at 7 a.m. and tee times are from 9 to 10 a.m. Cost is $70 for golf, use of cart, prizes and steak dinner, or $25 for dinner only.

CORN ROAST | Cedar Lake

 A Church Picnic and Corn Roast will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. Aug. 23 at First Baptist Church, 13419 Parrish Ave. The Brown Family of Mokena, Ill. will perform a gospel concert at 4 p.m. There will be games and horse back rides for the kids.

DINNER CRUISE | Gary

Gary Chamber of Commerce hosts a Spirit of Chicago Dinner Cruise from 7 to 10 p.m. Aug. 29 boarding from Majestic Star Casino's Buffington Harbor. Cost is $80 for a buffet dinner, dancing and entertainment while cruising on Lake Michigan. Boarding time is 6 p.m. Sponsorships are available.

TOUCH OF ELEGANCE | Hobart

St. Mary Medical Center Auxiliary will host its ninth annual Touch of Elegance Luncheon at noon Sept. 13 at Avalon Manor, 3550 E. U.S. 30. The event features the easy listening music of Charlie Blum and Friends from the Star Plaza along with gourmet food, door prizes and a cash raffle. Doors will open at 11 a.m. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased at the Hospital Gift Shop, 1500 S. Lake Park Ave., or by phone.

GRINDERS PLAY | Hobart

Deep River Grinders play vintage base ball at 2 p.m. Aug. 24 vs. the Downers Grove Plowboys from Illinois on Grinder Field at Deep River County Park, 9410 Old Lincoln Hwy. Spectators are welcome; bring a blanket or chair for seating. Refreshments will be available. Admission is free.

MUSEUM OPEN | Merrillville

Merrillville/Ross Township Historical Society is open from 1 to 4 p.m. Sundays through October, at 13 W. 73rd Ave. This year's theme is "Celebrations," and special exhibits closing after Aug. 24 include the "Golden Age of Indiana Literature" and "The Hoosier Centennial: A Look Back at the 1916 Celebration," both traveling exhibits from the Indiana Historical Society.

QUILTING BEE | Hobart

Stop in Wood’s Grist Mill at Deep River County Park, 9410 Old Lincoln Hwy., from 1 to 4 p.m. Aug. 24 to visit with the Deep River Quilters as they work on the current quilt. This original quilt was pieced together using donated blocks donated by many quilters. Watch as volunteers hand-quilt this creation, giving it depth and dimension. Sit with them and put in a few stitches or learn about the quilting program. Quilts made at the park since 1979 are on exhibit.

FRIENDS MEET | Wheatfield

Friends of the Wheatfield Library meet at 1 p.m. Aug. 26 in the library's large meeting room, 350 S. Bierma St. All members and those interested in joining are welcome. Those interested in sharing lunch before the meeting will gather at noon at Stephanie's Cafe

ARTISTS MEET | Hobart

The newly-formed Deep River Artists will meet at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 25 in the meeting room of the Visitor Center at Deep River County Park, 9410 Old Lincoln Hwy. Artists enjoy demonstrations, learn new techniques, present exhibits in Wood’s Mill Gallery, learn of area classes and exhibits and offer classes to members.  Artists are asked to bring to the meetings examples of their work to show and talk about - in the form of a photo or the actual artwork, if not too large. There are no dues and no registration.

ANNUITANTS CLUB | Whiting

Standard Oil Annuitants Club meets at 1 p.m. Sept. 4. The group will have a picnic at 10 a.m. Sept. 11 at Whiting Park and travels at 10 a.m. Sept. 22 to Fair Oaks Farm.

GARAGE SALE | Crown Point

Annual Boy Scout Troop 45 Garage Sale will be held from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 20 at the south end of the weekly Crown Point Farmers' Market on South Main St. The troop is accepting donated merchandise for the sale from 7 to 8 p.m. every Thursday prior to the sale at the First Presbyterian Church, 218 S. Court St. Troop members will also be available to pick up items on Thursday evenings; to arrange a pick-up contact Mary at (219) 662-8047.  The scouts are looking for household items, toys, clothing and tools.  They do not accept building materials or large appliances. All items donated need to be in good repair/condition; donations are also tax deductible. All proceeds support the scouts and their camping trips.

GOLF OUTING | Highland

The Independent Veterans Society of Indiana, Inc., will hold its first golf outing Aug. 30 at Wicker Park Golf Course, 8554 Indianapolis Blvd. Registration is at 8 a.m., with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. The cost is $100 per golfer, which includes lunch, dinner, drink tickets and door prizes. Independent Veterans Society of Indiana is a nonprofit organization that helps with assistance, guidance, information and group support for veterans and their families on a 24-hour, seven-day-a-week basis.

The June dinner meeting of the GFWC Lake Dalecarlia Woman's Club took place at the Cornerstone Mansion, and members held the drawing for the Light Drawing, with proceeds used to finance street lights in the community. Winners are: Tom & Nancy Witham - $100; Irmie Kohanyi - $50 Centier donation;

Gina Farnsworth - $25; Marshall McCoy - $50 gift certificate to Maple Grove Nursery; Mary Kimmerling n Noevir Skin Care basket from Bridget Gruzdis; D. Wagner - $30 gift certificate to Sickinger’s Jewelry;

Kay Kiechle - $25 certificate for Premier Design Jewelry from Lisa Justice; Dorothy Swanson - $20 certificate to County Market; Mike Coburn - $15 certificate to Cornerstone Mansion, and Marguerite Mauk - $10 Lake Dale Ale certificate. Gladys Weaver, Jim & Bonnie Hull, Pat Koeple, Susan Bird and Robert James each won a $5 certificate from Schoops in Lowell, while William & Karen Drabik and Leslie Seydel each won a smoke alarm donated by the Lake Dalecarlia Fire Department, and Julie Robinson won five tanning sessions at Classy Cuts.
