CORN MAZE OPENS | Lowell

Make your way through a life-size puzzle of corn when more than 10 acres of cornfield becomes a maze featuring an "Astronomy" theme from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekends, Aug. 23 through Oct. 26, and Labor Day, at Buckley Homestead County Park, north of the picnic shelters on Hendricks St. Park admission is free Aug. 23, 24, 30 and 31 and Sept. 1 with admission to the maze. Join the challenge by finding all the clues and answering the multiple choice questions posted throughout the maze. Divide into teams and see which team can answer the most Buckley Challenge Questions.  Admission is $5 for adults and $4 for children 5 to 12. Younger children enter free, but all children 11 and younger must be accompanied by someone older than 18. Smoking, alcohol, glass, or dogs are not permitted in the corn maze. DONATE BLOOD | Hobart

Heartland Blood Centers will hold a blood drive from 7 to 11 a.m. Aug. 27 at the Hobart Family YMCA, 601 W. 40th Place. Donors will receive a Moola Card for a free quart of Oberweis ice cream. Call to schedule an appointment; walk-ins are also welcome. A photo ID is required.

LIGHT THE NIGHT | Crown Point

The Crown Point Beef 'O' Brady's is donating 15 percent of all sales from 4 to 8 p.m. Aug. 27 to this year's Northwest Light The Night Walk. Stop in to eat, buy a paper balloon or donating to the Beef 'O' Brady's team at 107th and Broadway. Light The Night is The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s annual evening fundraising walk to build awareness of blood cancers and raise funds for cures. All proceeds support LLS's mission to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families.

CARS & BIKES | Crown Point

A Benefit Car and Bike Show will be held Sept. 1 at Church of the Four Seasons, 9100 E. 109th Ave. Registration costs $20 and begins at 8 a.m., with awards presented at 3 p.m. Admission is $3, or $2 with a donated canned good. Kids' games, food, music included. Bean Bag Tournament starts at 11 a.m. with entry fee of $10 for an individual and $20 for a team. This year the proceeds will benefit Winfield-Porter Township Food Pantry, Bashor Children's Home, COFS Good Samaritan Fund and the Madison Dobrowski Fund.

STREET FAIR | Merrillville

Mill Health Campus is hosting a street fair from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Aug. 30 for a good cause. The goal is to raise $5,000 for its Memory Walk Team, a group of employees who will walk Sept. 30 in the Alzheimer's Association's Memory Walk at Hidden Lake Park in Merrillville. The street fair, at the facility at 101 W. 87th Ave., will feature a deejay, games for the kids, raffles, craft booths, food vendors and bingo. All proceeds will go to the Alzheimer’s Association Memory Walk.

RUMMAGE SALE | Winfield

The Presbyterian Women of Christ Presbyterian Church will hold its annual rummage sale from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 23 at the church, 7416 E. 109th Ave. Proceeds will support the mission of the Presbyterian Women. There will also be a bake sale with coffee, soft drinks and juice available.

SHOW FOR MEALS | Hobart

M & M Productions and Ross Music Theatre will present two performances of"The Music of Harry Chapin" to benefit Meals on Wheels of Northwest Indiana. Curtain tine is 7:30 p.m. today and Aug. 23 at the Center Stage Studio Theatre, 227 Center St. Tickets are $15. The show has been described as 23 short stories told by an amazing songwriter and storyteller, featuring the music of the late folk balladeer Harry Chapin.

CIRCUS TICKETS | Crown Point

Crown Point F.O.P. Lodge 176 and the City of Crown Point have pre-sale tickets available through Aug. 24 for the Kelly Miller Circus, celebrating its 70th year of entertainment with 4:30 and 7:30 p.m. shows Aug. 25 at Sauerman Woods, 1000 E. South St. Advance tickets that benefit the FOP and city are $9 for adults and $5 for children 2 to 12; younger children attend free. Day of show tickets will be $12 for adults and $6 for children No exchanges or refunds will be issued. Tickets will be sold until 4 p.m. today at City Hall, 101 N. East St., and Crown Point Parks Department, 1313 E. North St. Tickets will be on sale until Aug. 24 at the Crown Point Police Department and Strack & Van Til at 10851 Broadway and 200 Franciscan Drive. The public is welcome to come out Aug. 25 and watch the animals being unloaded and fed and the elephants raising the big top.  Activities will begin at 7:30 a.m., and the tent will be raised between 8:30 and 9 a.m.  Guides will be furnished.

GOLF FOR BASKETBALL | Crown Point

The seventh annual Crown Point Boys Basketball Golf Outing will be held Sept. 14 at White Hawk Golf Course, 1001 White Hawk Drive off Summit Street. Cost is $400 per foursome by Aug. 24 and $450 after that date for greens fee, use of cart and dinner. Head coach Clint Swan will be the dinner speaker. All proceeds benefit the Bulldog boys basketball program.

HEAL YOURSELF | Merrillville

A Chi-Lel Qigong Level I Workshop will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 23 at The Wellness Shoppe, 5495 Broadway. SMOOTH TRANSITION | Crown Point

Franciscan Communities at St. Anthony Campus will be hosting a seminar entitled, “Smoothing the Transition to a Retirement Community” from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Aug. 27 at St. Anthony Assisted Home, at 203 Franciscan Drive. Lauri Wertz of St. Anthony Assisted Living, along with St. Anthony Assisted Living residents, will review options available to seniors and their loved ones as they look to transition into a retirement community. The seminar will include answers to commonly asked questions, review common myths about retirement communities and answer any audience questions. RSVP.

PAGAN PRIDE DAY | Portage

Local pagans, followers of nature- or earth-centered pre-Christian religions, will gather from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 23 at Woodland Park, 2100 Willowcreek Road, for vendors, information booths, workshops, children's events, a food drive to benefit the greater community and a harvest ritual. Admission is free. Donations of nonperishable items for the food drive will be accepted. The Northwest Indiana festival is organized by Portage Pagan Pride, Inc., the Northwest Indiana Pagan Association and Wolves Den, and is part of the international Pagan Pride Project. Portage Pagan Pride, Inc., founded in 2008, is a local chapter of the international Pagan Pride Project, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the advancement of religion and elimination of prejudice and discrimination based on religious beliefs.
