Summer supper | Griffith
The women's organization of Griffith Lutheran Church will host a summer supper followed by a Pampered Chef party at 6 tonight at the church, 1000 N. Broad St. Attendees will learn quick, easy and inexpensive meals.

Harvest Fest | East Chicago
Sunnyside's third annual Harvest Fest will take place from noon to 4 p.m. Aug. 30. It will feature a back-to-school "So You Think You Can Dance" contest patterned after the TV show. Activities will include senior bingo, bingo, refreshments, live music, games, Ronald McDonald Magic Show and special appearance by Gemel and Jessenia Tribble, sister and brother singing duo from Gary.

Wounded healers | Highland
Wounded Healers grief support program will begin its fall series from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Aug. 27 at St. James Church, Kennedy Avenue and 45th Street. There will be separate groups for death of a spouse, death of a parent or sibling, death of a child or grandchild and other relationships. The suicide survivors support group will also begin sessions. Each of the groups is led by a trained, certified facilitator. The program is free.

Celebration | East Chicago
A Labor Day celebration begins at 6 p.m. Aug. 31 at East Chicago Marina, 3301 Aldis Ave. The event features "Everardo y Su Flota Musical" and DJ Joweto. There will be fireworks, food and music for the entire family. Admission is free. Music starts at 7 p.m. No coolers are allowed.

Basketball | Hammond
Hessville Youth Basketball will hold registration for boys and girls ages 5 to 15. Early bird registration with a discount of $10 per family will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Sept. 3 at Jean Shepherd Community Center, 3031 Mahoney Drive. Cost is $50 per child and $25 for each additional child or immediate family member. Additional registration will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Sept. 6; 6 to 8 p.m. Sept. 10; 6 to 8 p.m. Sept. 17 and the final registration date is 1 to 3 p.m. Sept. 27. These will also be at the Jean Shepherd Community Center. A birth certificate is required for all new players. A mandatory fundraiser is required.

Neuter Scooter | Hammond
Appointments can be made now for the Neuter Scooter, which will start spaying and neutering cats at 8 a.m. Sept. 3 at the Hammond Civic Center, 5825 S. Sohl Ave. This mobile clinic offers an innovative approach to controlling cat overpopulation by making services convenient and affordable. Each surgery is performed by a licensed veterinarian. Charity ride | Northwest Indiana
The eighth annual charity ride for Opportunity Enterprises begins at 10:30 a.m. Aug. 30. Last bike out is noon, last bike in is 5 p.m. Start at John's Place in Griffith and end at Waterfront Lounge in Lake Station. It's $15 per person and $25 per couple. There will be door prizes, live music, food and 50/50.

Guitar lessons | Whiting
The Whiting Parks Department will be offering guitar lessons for ages 7 through adult. Beginner or advanced students are welcome to join the new 10-week session. Classes for advanced students begin from 6 to 7 p.m. Sept. 8 and for beginners they are from 6 to 7 p.m. Sept. 12. Fees are $100 for 46394 area residents and $110 for nonresidents. SIGN LANGUAGE | Merrillville
Everybody Counts will offer an eight-week American Sign Language beginners class to ages 11 and older from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesdays, starting Sept. 16, at 911 Broadway, Suite A. Instructors Rita Marchuk and Frances Santos are ASL-trained. Th class costs $75 but a $15 discount is offered to those older than 60 and those who bring a friend. Swim Club | Highland
Registration for the Highland Hurricanes Swim Club will be from 9 a.m. to noon Sept. 6; and 5:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Sept. 9; and 9 p.m. to midnight Sept. 13 at Highland High School, 9135 Erie St. Enter Door P by softball fields. The Highland Hurricanes Swim Club is a competitive swim club for ages 5 through high school age. The club has evening practices and competes in local meets. The swim season will run from Sept. 15 to Feb. 22. Swimmers should bring a swimsuit and towel; the coach will conduct an in-water evaluation.
