YOUTH SOCCER | Hobart
Hobart Family YMCA is offering a fall soccer league for boys and girls in age groups 3-4 and 5-7. The cost is $30 for members and $60 for nonmembers. Registration runs through Sept. 3. The season is set to begin Sept. 20. All games will be played on Saturday mornings. Teams will practice once a week for one hour.

BALLET CLASS | Merrillville
Merrillville Parks and Recreation Department will sponsor ballet and classes for ages 7 and older for six Thursdays starting Sept. 4 at the Pruzin Community Center, 5750 Tyler Place. Instruction will be held from 6 to 6:45 p.m. teaching strength, coordination, discipline and a healthy respect for body and mind. Cost is $40 for residents and $45 for nonresidents. TINY TAPS | Merrillville
Merrillville Parks and Recreation Department sponsors Ballet and Tap Dance classes for ages 3 to 6 from 10 to 10:45 a.m. Saturdays starting Sept. 6 at the Pruzin Community Center, 5750 Tyler Place. Cost for six weeks is $40 for residents and $45 for nonresidents. Register by Aug. 29. A minimum of 5 students is required.

FALL GOLF LEAGUE | Cedar Lake
Lake County Parks and Recreation Department will host a non-instructive, noncompetitive Junior Golf League this fall for ages 5 to 17 at Cedar Creek Family Golf Center, 10483 W. 109th Ave. Youths will play nine holes on Wednesdays, Sept. 3 through Oct. 22, with tee times beginning at 4 p.m. Cost is $40 for ages 5 to 9 (parents must stay on the property) and $60 for ages 10 to 17. Experienced golfers only, with proper etiquette and knowledge of the game required. Golfers must have own clubs, balls and water bottles. Register by first day of play.

STORY TIME | DeMotte
Babies 6 to 24 months, with a caregiver, can attend Lap-sit Story Time from 10 to 10:30 a.m. Sept. 4 and the first Thursday of every month at the DeMotte Library, 901 Birch St. SW. NEW OFFICERS | Crown Point
Crown Point Police Department will host a swearing in ceremony for two new police officers at 10 a.m. today, immediately following the regularly scheduled Board of Works meeting, in the City Council chambers. The addition of Officers Michael D. Brazil II, 28, and Robert O. Ballas, 22, will bring the department’s total number of officers to 39. Each will be assigned to the Patrol Division after their field training is completed.

MORE CONCERTS | Hobart
The Hobart Arts League has added Clock Tower events at 7 p.m. Tuesdays through the month of September at Third and Main streets downtown. The line-up includes children's entertainment with Leonardo on Sept. 2, classical guitarist Marco Villarreal on Sept. 9 rock and roll with Hero Syndrome on Sept. 23 and contemporary rock & folk with Dave Hutchins on Sept. 30.

JUNIOR MISS | Cedar Lake
Cedar Lake will host the community's 33rd annual Cedar Lake Junior Miss Program on Oct. 5 at Hanover Central High School's Auditorium. This scholastic program offers high school senior girls an opportunity to earn scholarship funds for college. The girls are judged in the areas of fitness, poise, talent, judge’s interview, and scholastic achievement. The girls enjoy working together to develop a fitness and poise routine for the program. They are also treated to a variety of events through the five weeks of the program. Any senior girl who is a resident of Cedar Lake may participate. CHARITY RIDE | Northwest Indiana
The eighth annual charity ride for Opportunity Enterprises begins at 10:30 a.m. Aug. 30. Last bike out is noon, last bike in is 5 p.m. Start at John's Place in Griffith and end at Waterfront Lounge in Lake Station. It's $15 per person and $25 per couple. There will be door prizes, live music, food and 50/50.

BE A COOL KID | Hobart
September is Cool Kids Have a Library Card Month. Children who come into the Hobart branch of the Lake County Public Library at 100 N. Main St. and show their library card will receive a sticker on their card and a prize. Also during September, preschoolers 3 to 5 will have the chance to color a picture of Clifford, the Big Red Dog. Parents can pick up a coloring sheet at the circulation desk. When returned, each child will receive a prize.

DRAW COMIC STRIPS | Hobart
Since Sept. 25 is National Comic Book Day, the Hobart branch of the Lake County Public Library at 100 N. Main St is extending a challenge to all youngsters during Cool Kids Have a Library Card Month. Bust out your favorite pens, pencils, or computer programs and create a comic strip that relates to the library or reading. Participants will have until Sept. 30 to present their entries. Group levels will be kindergarten through third grade, fourth through sixth grades, and seventh through 12th grades. All entries must be rated G for general audiences; comic strip contents must relate to the library or reading; no offensive language or pictures; no violence, and all entries will be reviewed by library staff before display for the public. Each entry will be included in a gift card prize drawing.

PRESCHOOL IN THE PARK | Hobart
Preschool in the Park for ages 3 and 4 will be held from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. or 1 to 2 p.m. Thursdays in September and October at Deep River County Park, 9410 Old Lincoln Highway. Children may hear stories, play games, make a craft, sing songs, do finger plays and take home a treat or coloring page. Fee is $1 per child per program and no advance registration is needed. Meet at the visitor center. Bring a brown bag lunch and picnic and hike in the park before or after the program. BALLET AUDITIONS | Merrillville
Auditions for Indiana Ballet Theatre’s 13th annual production of "The Nutcracker" will take place Sept. 6 at IBT’s studios, 8888 Louisiana (one block west of Mississippi and 89th Ave.) for the following age groups: ages 15 to adult, 1:30 to 3 p.m.; ages 12 to 14, 2:30 to 4 p.m., ages 8 to 12, 3:30 to 5 p.m., and ages 5 to 8, 4:30 to 6 p.m. Call backs will be held Sept. 13 with a parent meeting. GARAGE SALE | Crown Point
The Annual Boy Scout Troop 45 Garage Sale will be held from 7 a.m. to noon Sept. 20 at the south end of the weekly Crown Point Farmers' Market on South Main Street. The troop is accepting donated merchandise for the sale from 7 to 8 p.m. every Thursday prior to the sale and from 9 a.m. to noon Saturdays, Aug. 30, Sept. 6 and Sept. 13 at the First Presbyterian Church, 218 S. Court St. Troop members will be available to help unload and, to arrange a pick-up, contact Mary at (219) 662-8047. The scouts are looking for household items, toys, clothing and tools. They do not accept building materials or large appliances. All items donated need to be in good repair/condition; donations are also tax deductible. FALL SOCCER | Cedar Lake
Cedar Lake Park and Recreation Department offers Fall Soccer to children ages 4 to 13 at the Park of the Red Cedars, 7408 Constitution Ave. Sign up from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Aug. 30. 'Lil Kicks is offered for ages 4 to 5 (as of Sept. 1) and meets from 5:15 to 6 p.m. Wednesdays, Sept. 3 through Oct. 8. This program introduces soccer skills, team play, dribbling, scoring, passing and the opportunity to interact with peers. Children participate in warm up exercises, drills and then play a game. Each child receives a T-shirt and team photo for the fee of $20. A co-ed recreational Pee Wee League offers three age divisions; 6 to 7, 8 to 9 and 10 to 13. These teams practice weekly and games are held from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Saturdays, Sept. 13 through Oct. 18, on three fields. Fee of $30 includes a T-shirt and team photo.
