Man charged with three counts of child molestation

PORTER COUNTY | A Portage man was arrested Wednesday after being charged last week with three counts of felony child molestation.

William T. Pappas Jr., 31, of 6888 U.S. 20, Lot 36, Portage, faces as many as eight years in prison if convicted of a Class C felony.

Porter County police state in court documents that in 2006 and 2007, Pappas fondled his girlfriend's daughter, who is younger than 14. The girl told police he threatened to punish her if she told anyone. The girl also told police that she would try to stop Pappas, but he would hold her down.

Police said Pappas originally denied molesting the child, but then talked with police again and admitted his involvement.

Man reports he found pet rabbit dead in cage

JACKSON TOWNSHIP | A Jackson Township man reported Wednesday that he found one of his rabbits dead, and it appears someone broke the rabbit's neck.

Jack Musgrave, of east County Road 1100 North, told police the rabbit, valued at $20, was killed between Tuesday night and Wednesday morning. Musgrave told police a man he's had problems with may have killed the rabbit, but the man denied any involvement.

Police say some roads will close for festival

VALPARAISO | Valparaiso police are warning the public that some roadways will close and others will be busier because of Saturday's Popcorn Festival.

Downtown roadways will began closing Friday evening for the festival. Starting at 6:45 a.m. Saturday, Lincolnway will be closed from downtown west to Campbell Street, then north on Campbell to Glendale Boulevard will be closed for the Popcorn Panic race.

Roadways will briefly reopen, then will close for the 10 a.m. parade, which includes Calumet Avenue from Evans Avenue south to Morgan Boulevard, continuing south to Lincolnway, westbound to Campbell Street and northbound to Park Avenue.

Bicycles, skateboards and pets are not allowed in the downtown area during the festival.

Vandalism. Tom's Tire and Auto, 708 W. Ind. 2, reported someone threw a piece of concrete through the front window of the business, causing $115 damage.

Theft. Robert Sulitz, of the 2100 block of Annabelle, reported the theft of a television/DVD combo and two cans of coffee. The loss is $312.

Vandalism. Grant Street resident Sandra Friday reported $1,500 damage to her vehicle.

Theft. County Road 1400 North resident Russell Harper reported a $200 saw stolen from his garage.

Theft. Fern Street resident Julie Regeski reported the theft of a $750 motorcycle.

Theft. Portage Avenue resident Billy Warren reported the theft of a $132 air compressor and a $200 hammer drill from his garage.

Theft. Northern Trans & Differential, 6641 U.S. 20, reported someone damaged a fence and stole $400 worth of alternators, radiators and transmission housings.
