HARVEST FEST | Hobart

Hobart Special Events Committee will sponsor the first Hobart Harvest Fest from 2 to 10 p.m. Sept. 20 on Main Street. Get a taste of Hobart food vendors, enjoy the Children's

Corner, watch a model boat race, participate in the cake walk, enjoy the music, take a paddle boat ride and enjoy the Lakefront Dedication Ceremony at 7 p.m. showcasing the latest addition to Lake George. A fireworks display will take place at 9 p.m.

CAMPFIRE PROGRAM | Griffith

A free fall campfire program will be held at 7:30 p.m. today at Oak Ridge Prairie County Park, 301 S. Colfax St. Gather around a campfire and join a naturalist for some quality time outdoors to experience the park at night while learning about what might be beyond the firelight. Dress appropriately for the weather and bring insect repellent and a stick for roasting marshmallows. Call to register.

ATTORNEY HONORED | Merrillville

Steve Tokarski, a Crown Point resident who practices law in Schererville, will be honored at a dinner at 2 p.m. Sept. 21 at the Salvatorian Monastery, 5755 Pennsylvania Ave. for his years of service to Polonia, the community and his church. Hosted by PNA Lodge 2365 - Silver Bell Club, tickets are $30. A cash bar and greetings begin at 1 p.m., and lunch at 2 p.m. will be followed by a short program. Reservations are required. Tokarski has held a number of posts within the Polish National Alliance and the Polish American Congress. He is also a 20-year member of Chopin Chorus No. 122 of the Polish Singers Alliance of America and a director for the Gary Jaycees.

INTERNATIONAL FILM | Hammond

Purdue University Calumet’s International Film Series resumes with a campus showing of “Prez dozhdot” (Before the Rain), at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 17 in YJean Chambers Hall in the Student Union & Library, room 353. A Macedonian film by Milcho Manchevski, it deals with violence in the nations of the former Yugoslavia. All films are presented in their original language with English subtitles. A faculty-led discussion will take place before and after each film viewing.Admission is free. Limited seating is available.

TRAVELOGUE SHOWN | St. John

Crown Point Christian School will present its first travelogue, "Sea to Sea in a Model T," at 7 p.m. Sept. 17 on a 20-foot screen in new school gym, 10550 Park Place St. Don and Fran VanPolen travel from "Sea to Sea" in a 1926 Model T Roadster to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Henry Ford's old car. Their journey takes them from Puget Sound in Washington State to the Easternmost town and lighthouse in America. Along the way they describe the landscape and tell the story of Henry Ford's old car, the car that began mass production of automobiles all over the world. Families are welcome. A free will offering will be taken and a generous donor will match donations up to $10,000.

BALLROOM DANCING | Merrillville

Merrillville Parks and Recreation Department offers ballroom dance lessons from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesdays beginning Sept. 24 at Pruzin Community Center, 5750 Tyler Place. Paul Stover will teach the waltz, cha-cha and tango. Enjoy this great aerobic exercise in a six-week program that costs $40 for individual residents and $70 for couples who are town residents, and $45 for individual nonresidents and $80 for nonresident couples. "The December Boys" is the title of the free Senior Movie Matinee at 2 p.m. Sept. 18 at the DeMotte Library, 901 Birch St. SW. Starring Daniel Radcliffe and Lee Cormie, this PG-13 movie is about four orphan boys, all with December birthdays, who leave their Australian orphanage for a holiday by the sea, only to find themselves competing for a permanent home. CAR RAFFLE | St. John

Lake Central Band Boosters' fifth annual Take the Car or Take the Cash raffle is in full swing. A 2008 Ford Mustang or $10,000 cash goes to the winning ticket holder if the minimum 2,800 tickets are sold. If fewer than 2,800 are sold, it becomes a 50/50 raffle. All proceeds go to support Lake Central band programs. Tickets cost $10 each and can be purchased from any Lake Central band student or online at www.lcband.com using PayPal. The drawing will take place Sept. 19.

MORNING MOVIE | Wheatfield

Adults are invited to view "Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day," the Morning Movie selection from 10 a.m. to noon Sept. 18 at the Wheatfield Library, 350 S. Bierma St. Starring Amy Adams and David Alexander, this PG-13 film tells the story of a governess who finds a new position as social secretary to a London socialite and debutante, sweeping her into the world of the glamorous within minutes. The public is invited to a free movie in the park at 7 p.m. Sept. 19 at Hessville Park, 173rd Street and Kennedy Avenue. HAY RIDES FOR ALL | Lowell

Non-reserved hay rides for for individuals and families will be held on a first-come, first-serve basis at 1 and 2 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays, Sept. 21 through Oct. 26 (except Oct. 4 & 5 during the Fall Festival) at Buckley Homestead County Park, 3606 Belshaw Road. Enjoy the quiet, steady pace of the horses as they pull the hay wagon around the back 80-acre trail.  Look for pheasant, deer, and coyote through the wooded areas and in the open fields past the pioneer log cabin. Cost is $3 per person. Groups may reserve evening hay rides by calling the business office.

The annual Bizarre Bazaar takes place from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. Sept. 20 in downtown Hammond. Fred Schmidt American Legion Post 20 hosts its annual Steak Fry & Las Vegas Night from 4 p.m. to midnight Sept. 20 at 1401 N. Main St. Dinner is $15 and includes a "cook your own" 14-ounce steak , baked potato, tossed salad, bread and butter, served from 4 to 7 p.m. Free refreshments are included with dinner. COMIC APPEARS | Gary

Indiana University Northwest Office of Diversity and Equity will kick off its 2008-09 Diversity Programming Series with a free performance by HBO Def Poet Joe Hernandez-Kolski, who will present his show 'Refried Latino Pride' at 6 p.m. Sept. 19 in the Savannah Auditorium at IUN, southeast corner of the main campus parking lot at 33rd Avenue and Broadway. A writer, actor, and spoken-word artist who grew up in Chicago and graduated from Princeton, Hernandez-Kolski has earned international acclaim for comedic performances and commentaries. SHIPSHEWANA TOUR | Northwest Indiana

Centier Bank's Advantage Program is planning a bus trip titled the “Backroads of Shipshewana” on Oct. 22 that still has room for additional reservations.  The cost is $75 for Centier clients and $80 for non-Centier clients and includes transportation, lunch and tours of various Amish stores. Pick-up locations are in Highland, Merrillville and Valparaiso. The deadline for reservations is Sept. 19.

FLEA MARKET TRIP | Hobart

Hobart Parks Department is planning a trip to the Shipshewana Flea Market on Sept. 23. The bus will leave at 7 a.m. from the Hobart Community Center, 111 E. Old Ridge Road, and return at approximately 5 p.m. Cost is $25.

Antique Expo is Sept. 20 and 21 at the new Crete-Monee High School, 1515 Exchange St. Show hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. The show will include Steiff bears, dolls, depression glass, furniture, lamps, cookie jars, jewelry, vintage clothes, antique toys, books, games, records, Coca-Cola items, American coins, glass crystal, large display of price guide books, pattern glass, sports collectables, figurines, porcelain, signed old art glass, Tiffany silver and bronzes, antique dog figures, railroad, military, political, and brewery collectables. Dr. Kenneth Schoon, author of "Calumet Beginnings: Ancient Shorelines and Settlements at the South End of Lake Michigan," will discuss his book and findings on the geologic history of the region at 7 p.m. Sept. 18 at the Lake County Public Library, 1919 W. U.S. 30. Find out why Schoon calls the Little Calumet River,“ one of the most flood-prone rivers in the state.”
