Fall has arrived and to celebrate, the Mayor’s Office of Special Events is hosting its Fourth Annual Hay Ride from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

The free hay ride will begin at the Old Sheriff’s House and proceed around the historic downtown area. This year, participants may also take a tour of the sheriff’s house at a cost of $5 for adults and $2 for children 12 and younger.

Crown Point’s downtown Centier Bank branch will sponsor munchkin pumpkins for all the little ones while supplies last. Crown Point Church at 105 N. Court St. will be providing cookies, candy and face painting for children of all ages.

Stop for reading

Take Time Out for Reading will be celebrated Friday. Join thousands of people across Northwest Indiana at 10 a.m. to take time out of a busy day and "put your nose in a good book."

If you happen to get caught reading at 10 a.m. in the Crown Point Community Library, 214 S. Court St., you will receive a coupon for a free book from the ongoing book sale.

This program is sponsored by the Northwest Indiana Literacy Coalition and other library partners to help everyone recognize the importance of reading. Visit www.nwiliteracy.org.

Region of readers

Crown Point Community Library will also take part in the Books to Bridge the Region during October. This year the adult book selection is "Shadow Divers" by Robert Kurson. The library will offer book discussions at 1 and 7 p.m. Oct. 8.

On Oct. 18, Kurson will speak at the Portage Library at 2 p.m.
