MOMS CLUB | Schererville

MOMS Club of Schererville will have its annual open house from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Oct. 10 at the Dyer-Schererville branch of the Lake County Public Library, 1001 W. U.S. 30. Moms and children are invited.

FALL BRUNCH | Schererville

Women’s Guild of Calumet College of St. Joseph will hold its 27th annual Fall Brunch Oct. 19 at Briar Ridge Country Club, 123 Country Club Drive. The luncheon will include split the pot, raffles and table prizes. Social hour will be at noon and meal at 1. Donation is $35. Guild provides financial support for the college’s programs and scholarships.

CORVETTE CHALLENGE | Morocco

Crown Point Corvette Club and other surrounding corvette clubs will host an All Corvette Challenge bracket race day from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 11 at the U.S. 41 Drag Strip. All proceeds will go to the American Red Cross to benefit the flood victims in NW Indiana. All Corvette owners and spectators are invited to join in the efforts to raise money for flooding victims. Race entry cost is $35 and spectators pay $5 per car. Food and drinks, a 50/50 raffle and awards will be given to the top four finishers in the race. FYI: Call Jeff Graystone at (219) 789-0169.

TACO DINNER | Dyer

A taco dinner will be served from 2 to 7 p.m. Oct. 11 at VFW Post 6448, 2125 Gettler St. Choice of three beef or pork tacos, beans and rice for $6, a taco salad is $5 and single tacos are $1.50. Carry-outs available for $1 extra.

TOASTMASTER AWARD | Merrillville

District 11 of Toastmasters International will present Thomas Carroll, president and CEO of Lakeshore Public Television, with a distinguished service award at its fall conference awards luncheon Oct. 11 at The Radisson Hotel at Star Plaza, Interstate 65 and U.S. 30.. He was nominated for the award by the Toastmasters' Executive Diction Club of Northwest Indiana. Keynoting the conference is Edward Hearn, a criminal defense lawyer and minister who claimed the title of 2006 World Champion of Public Speaking.

The fall conference Oct. 10 and 11 will offer educational sessions, presentations and awards. The annual Humorous Speech Contest at 8 p.m. Oct. 11 is open to the public.

District 11 is made up of 141 clubs and 2,500 members in Indiana and the northwestern part of Kentucky, including seven Toastmaster Clubs in Northwest Indiana.

SPAGHETTI DAY | Lowell

A Spaghetti Lunch and Dinner featuring meat or marinara sauce, salad, breadstick, coffee/lemonade and a dessert will be served Oct. 10 at St. Edward School,  201 S. Nichols St. Lunch will be served from  11:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at a cost of $5 for adults $4 for seniors and $2 per child, while children 3 and younger eat free. Enjoy a pre-game dinner from 4 to 7:30 p.m. before the Lowell Red Devils host the Munster Mustangs.

Cost is $7 for adults, $6 for seniors and $4 per child, while children 3 and younger eat free.

CANDIDATES NIGHT | Schererville

Merrillville/Duneland Business & Professional Women, sponsored by Andorra’s Banquet Facility, will hold a Candidates Night at 6 p.m. Oct. 13 at Andorra’s Banquet Facility, 1112 U.S. 41, Schererville. Candidates running for national, state and Lake and Porter county offices have been invited to attend. All candidates having contested races will be given the opportunity to speak for three minutes, distribute literature and meet the voters. This event is open to the public free of charge. Appetizers will be served and cash bar will be available.

BUNCO PARTY | Lake Station

VFW District 1 is hosting a bunco party from 1 to 5 p.m. Oct. 12 at VFW Post 9323, 2750 Central Ave. Soup, a salad bar, and desserts will be served, and there will be door prizes, a silent auction and a 1 p.m. performance by an ROTC unit. Donation is $5. Proceeds will benefit veterans.

MUSEUM MEETING | Dyer

Dyer Historical Society will meet at 6 p.m. Oct. 14 in the DHS Museum, located in the lower level of the Dyer Town Hall on U.S. 30 just east of Hart Street. New members and volunteers are welcome.

CHAMBER LUNCH | Cedar Lake

Cedar Lake Chamber of Commerce will hold a luncheon meeting at noon Oct. 14 at Jack's On The Dock Seafood Grill, 13118 Lake Shore Drive. Guest speaker will be a representative of the Lake County Solid Waste Management District, who will discuss a proposal to turn waste into ethanol. Attendees will order from the menu, but reservations should be made with the chamber.

MEMBERSHIP LUNCH | Schererville

Schererville Chamber of Commerce will welcome U.S. Rep. Pete Visclosky , D-Merrillville, as guest speaker to its monthly membership luncheon at noon Oct. 15 at Banquets at St. George on 77th Street. Cost is $12 for a grilled pork chop meal with salad, spiced apples, chicken breast, vegetable potato and dessert. RSVP by noon Oct. 14.

BENEFIT FISH FRY | Lowell

As a community service project, Indian Trail Grange is hosting a fish fry from 4 to 7 p.m. Oct. 17 at the Grange Hall, 109 E. 181st Ave., to benefit local church food/household pantries. Cost is $9 for adults and $4 for children 4 to 12, while younger children eat free. Dinner includes all-you-can-eat fish or chicken strips, fries, cole slaw, applesauce, bread, dessert and beverage.

DAR LUNCHEON | Merrillville

Timothy Ball Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution will host a lunch in honor of Indiana State Regent Cynthia Stout Oct. 18 at The Patio Restaurant, 7706 Broadway. Stout, from Kokomo, is a candidate for office in the national organization in 2009.

GARDENERS TO MEET | Hobart

Lake County Park Department's Gardening Club meets at 10 a.m. Oct. 14 and Nov. 11 in the Visitor Center meeting room at Deep River County Park, 9410 Old Lincoln Hwy. Parks department horticulturist Bryan McKay will discuss chemical drift and damage, Japanese beetle time, galls and summer disease problems. Members learn about all types of flowers, plants, vegetables and trees and how to solve gardening problems, get a monthly newsletter and help the staff plant and maintain gardens at the county parks. Refreshments are available. There are no dues.

MEETING CANCELED | Hammond

Due to the recent flooding problems, the October general meeting of the Calumet Astronomical Society, re-scheduled from Oct. 13 to Oct. 20 at the Lake County Convention and Visitors Center in Hammond, has been cancelled. The next regular meeting will be held at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 10.

POLKA DANCE | East Chicago

American Polka Association presents Autumn Polka Dance from 7 to 11 p.m. Oct. 11 at American Legion Post 369, 1401 W. Chicago Ave. Musical entertainment by Stas Bulanda's Old School Review. Admission is $10 per person, payable at the door. Children 16 and younger, with parent or guardian, are admitted free. Doors open at 6 p.m. food and refreshments will be available for purchase. No BYOB.
