Photography | University Park

Artist Marlene Gallagher will present her photographs of southern Africa at a Distinguished Lecture sponsored by the College of Arts and Sciences at Governors State University. The event is from 5 to 6:15 p.m. Nov. 5 in Engbretson Hall at Governors State University, 1 University Parkway. Gallaher is an artist with the Union Street Gallery in Chicago Heights. Her photographs of Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Kenya and South Africa capture the essence of the landscape, animals, and people of the region. This event is free and open to the public.

Flu shots | Homewood

Flu shots will be provided from 3 to 7 p.m. Nov. 5 at The Cancer Support Center, 2028 Elm Road. No appointment is needed. The vaccine is free to Medicare recipients, and the cost to non-Medicare patients is $24.99. All Medicare patients must bring in their Medicare Part B cards at the time of the clinic.

Church celebrates | Chicago

The beginning of a yearlong celebration marking the 125th anniversary of St. Columba Church in Chicago's Hegewisch neighborhood kicks off at 10:30 a.m. today with an All Souls Day Liturgy. Following the Mass there will be a dedication of the honorary St. Columba Drive by 10th Ward Chicago Alderman John Pope. Brunch will be served in St. Columba Social Center following the Mass and street dedication. St. Columba Church was founded in 1884. The church is at 13323 S Green Bay Ave.

Astronomy program | Beecher

What’s in the Sky This Month, a free, family astronomy program sponsored by the Forest Preserve District of Will County, will be at 7 p.m. Nov. 5 at Plum Creek Nature Center.

Join backyard astronomers and discover what is in the evening sky for the month of November. Among the nighttime items will be planets, the moon, orbiting spacecraft, comets, asteroids and a host of other objects. If telescope viewing is possible, the program may require a walk down paved paths to the viewing area. Dress for the weather. Registration for this program is required.

Plum Creek Nature Center is in Goodenow Grove Forest Preserve, 1.25 miles east of the intersection of Routes 1 and 394 on Goodenow Road, in Crete Township.

Family reading night | Chicago Heights

Bloom High School will host a Family Reading Night program from 7 to 8:30 p.m. November 6 in the Dr. James D. Steckel Library at the school, 101 W. 10th St. The event is open to school-aged children and their parents or caretakers. Mary Lidd, Bloom librarian,

said the theme of Family Reading Night is "Crowing About Books." Activities will include storytelling by Bloom students, a scarecrow book walk, a simple craft, family reading time and a free raffle. Apple cider, coffee and cookies will be served.

Production | Lansing

The Illiana Christian High School Drama Department will present C.S. Lewis' "The Lion, the Witch, and The Wardrobe" at 7 p.m. Nov. 6,7, and 8 and at 2 p.m. Nov. 8. Tickets are $5 each and are available in the school office. The Illiana Foundation RibFest will be held from 4 to 7 p.m., between the afternoon and evening shows on Nov. 8. Donations will be accepted for the dinner. The school is at 2261 Indiana Ave.

GRIEF SUPPORT | Highland

Wounded Healers grief support program presents Susan Adrians SSND, a licensed professional counselor with experience in helping with grief issues, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Nov. 5 at the St. James Church Hall, 45th and Kennedy Avenue. She will share her expertise on seeking inner strength to wok through issues of grief. There is no charge to attend. The public is welcome and there is no charge.

Pancake breakfast | Griffith

The Griffith Masonic Lodge will host a pancake and French toast breakfast from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. today at the lodge building at 209 N. Broad St. Breakfast includes pancakes, French toast, sausage links, fruit cup, tea, coffee, milk and orange juice. Price is $5 for adults, $4 for seniors and $3.50 for children younger than 12.

Chili cook-off | Griffith

Beiriger Elementary School will be hosting a chili cook-off from 3 to 6 p.m. Nov. 8 at the school, 601 N Lillian St. Sample chili and then vote for a favorite. Hot dogs, chips, corn bread, drink and baked goods will also be sold. Tickets purchased in advance are $10 for 25 tickets. If purchased at the door, tickets will be 50 cents each.

Turkey dinner | Whiting

A turkey dinner is from 5 to 8 p.m. Nov. 8 at Whiting Elks Lodge, 1521 - 119th St. Turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce, vegetables and dessert will be served. Donations are $9 per adult and $5 for children 3 to 12. Those who bring in two nonperishable/canned good items, get $1 off one adult ticket.  The nonperishable/canned goods will be given to the Whiting Food Pantry.

Illiana Artists | Munster

Illiana Artists will meet at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 10 at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 8955 Columbia Ave. Ryan Wanke of Sharpeye Framing, along with photographer Mitch Brown, will talk about photographing your work for reproduction. Visitors are welcome.

Celebration | Hobart

Hillcrest Baptist Church will be hosting a Founder's Day celebration starting at noon Nov. 9 at the church, 2825 E. Cleveland Ave. The event celebrates the role that the pilgrims at Plymouth played in setting the vision for America. Sample authentic food and participate in family activities. The United States Marine Corps Birthday Ball will begin at 6 p.m. Nov. 15 at Banquets at St. George, 528 W. 77th Ave. The event will celebrate 233 years of Marine history. It costs $80 per couple, which includes dinner, open bar and dancing. The event is open to the public.
