CASH FOR CANDY | Merrillville

Michael H. Min, DDS will sponsor a Halloween Candy Buy-Back Program this holiday. Children up to 14 can bring their unwanted Halloween candy from 4 to 6 p.m. Nov. 5 to the office at 1410 E. 85th Ave. and receive $1 a pound. The candy, along with toothbrushes, will be sent to U.S. military troops serving overseas via the Indiana Air National Guard's 122nd Fighter Wing - Blacksnakes.

YOGA CLASS | Merrillville

Enjoy a fun and relaxing yoga class led by M. G. PRESSURE TESTING | Shelby

Free blood pressure screening is held at 10 a.m. Nov. 3 at the Lowell Public Library's Shelby branch, 23321 Shelby Road. Screening is conducted on a first come first serve basis by volunteer technicians.

MEDICARE OVERVIEW | Merrillville

State Health Insurance Assistance Program is an organization designed to help seniors and Medicare beneficiaries with information and problems regarding their coverage with Medicare. Attend an overview of Medicare Part D from 10 a.m. to noon Nov. 5 at the Lake County Public Library, 1919 W. U.S. 30.. As always, attendees can evaluate their current insurance company with what is new for 2009. There will also be counselors on hand to talk to beneficiaries one on one, both those new to the program and those interested in getting help with their prescriptions. Light refreshments will be served.

GRIEF SUPPORT | Highland

Wounded Healers grief support program presents Susan Adrians SSND, a licensed professional counselor with experience in helping with grief issues, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Nov. 5 at the St. James Church Hall, 45th and Kennedy Avenue. She will share her expertise on seeking inner strength to wok through issues of grief. There is no charge to attend. The public is welcome and there is no charge.

URGE TO SPLURGE | DeMotte

Pat Wiers from the Purdue Extension Office will present Avoid the Urge To Splurge at 7 p.m. Nov. 6 at the DeMotte Library, 901 Birch St. SW. This free program for adults will offer tips on great holiday gifts that won't tax the budget and ways to lighten up on calories at holiday meals. TRY YOGA | Merrillville

Merrillville Parks and Recreation Department offers Yoga Level I classes from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Thursdays, beginning Nov. 6, at the Pruzin Center, 5750 Tyler St. This program is for those just beginning yoga or with a little experience, and works on every part of the body, including massaging and stimulating internal organs. Yoga can improve many health conditions, including obesity, nervousness, anxiety, fatigue, mental clarity and circulation. Cost is $20 for residents and $25 for nonresidents for five weekly sessions. Registration is open.

FAMILY SUPPORT | Hammond

CAMEO, an educational support group for family caregivers to the elderly, meets from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Nov. 4 at the Purdue University Calumet Entrepreneurship Center, 1247 E. 169th St. This session will feature a discussion of family stress. CAMEO has been offering support to those caring for elderly loved ones since 1982. The group meets on the first Tuesday of every month except July and August.

MAKING A CHOICE | Hebron

C.H.O.I.C.E.S. natural birth and parenting network holds free monthly community meetings with preplanned topics at 7 p.m. the first Wednesday of every month at the Hebron Community Center, 611 N. Main St. The Nov. 5 topic is Labor Pains and Baby Positions: A Pain in the Back. earn to belly map and some tricks of the trade to increase the chances for a normal, natural labor and birth. Lunge, lift, jiggle, the program will be interactive. No registration is required and all are invited. Nursing infants are welcome, but please be considerate of others by making other arrangements for toddlers and older children who may disrupt the program.

The Visiting Nurse Association of Porter County, will present "Hearing Loss and Aging" at locations in Lake and Porter Counties in November: 10:30 a.m. Nov. 6 at Merrillville Senior Center at Merrillville High School, 276 E. 68th Place; 2 p.m. Nov. 12 at Linden House, 360 W. 61st Ave., Hobart, behind St. Mary's Hospital; 12:15 p.m. Nov. 13 at Village Park Enrichment Center at Banta, 605 Beech St., Valparaiso; and 2 p.m. Nov. 21 at Jamestown Apartments Community Center, Virginia Park Drive, Valparaiso. This program will discuss how aging affects hearing. Participants will receive a free gift and a healthy snack.
