LOWELL | If it's Neil Simon, it must be funny.
And that's what the Lowell High School Theatre Arts Department is promising with its fall comedy, "Rumors," written by legendary playwright Neil Simon.
This farcical comedy is about four couples who gather at the residence of the Deputy Mayor of New York City and his wife to celebrate the couple's 10th wedding anniversary. Unfortunately, the deputy mayor is shot (only a flesh wound) and his wife disappears. Comic complications arise when the high-society guests decide to conceal the often unbelievable events of the night. Soon, they can't remember who was told what, and the hilarity builds.
"The audience will enjoy the extravagant, improbable situations of this highly entertaining comedy," said Kevin Deal, Lowell High School drama director.
Performances are set for 6 p.m. Thursday, 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 2 p.m. Sunday in the LHS auditorium. Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for students and senior citizens. They are available at the school or by calling (219) 696-7733.
"I’m very excited about this production," added Deal. "We have an excellent combination of experienced and new acting talent to showcase this year. Our crew has also done an outstanding job designing and constructing a beautiful set for these actors to work in."
The four couples include Chris and Ken Gorman, portrayed by Arielle Kresich and Brad Rickert; Claire and Lenny Ganz, played by Kelly Koza and Austin Davis; Cookie and Ernie Cusack, portrayed by Olivia Mucha and Mike Kroll, and Cassie and Glenn Cooper, portrayed by Mallory Swisher and Chris Chavez. The role of Officer Welch is filled by Jessica Francis, and the role of Officer Pudney is taken by Helen Dainton.
"This is a very entertaining group of students that have brought their personal enthusiasm and wit to the show, which I think will make this an exceptionally enjoyable experience for our audience," Deal said.
In addition to Deal, the student cast and crew is being supervised by Student Director Stephanie Holdmann. "Working as student director has been a lot of fun this year. The actors are hilarious and the crew has done an amazing job putting together the set. I can’t wait to show off our work!" Holdmann said.
Those attending "Rumors" will also have an opportunity to view the most recent sculptures added to the Fine Arts collection at LHS. Both by Ann Singer, one is located in the auditorium lobby, while the other faces west on the exterior of the auditorium.
