Now that Thanksgiving is over, it’s a count down to Christmas. I’m sure that schoolchildren are already counting the days until Christmas break. There are many holiday events happening in our city for children and families.
Santa Claus arrived Friday and will be visiting the Old Lake County Courthouse from noon to 4 p.m. Saturdays, as well as Sunday, Dec. 21, in the rotunda of the Lower Level Shops. Mrs. Claus and Elie the Elf will join him.
Parents are welcome to bring cameras and Crown Point shoppers are welcome to bring their gifts down to the rotunda for Santa’s Helpers to wrap. Gifts must be purchased at one of the downtown shops and receipts must be presented for this free service.
New this year is the Green Tree. Families are welcome to bring a homemade decoration for the Christmas tree located in the lower level. The ornament must be made out of paper, cleaned plastic or cardboard. Families should bring the ornament to the lower level rotunda on a Saturday to be checked in by one of Santa’s Helpers. The ornaments will be saved and reused year after year.
Grande Finale ends the year
Tickets are on sale for the fifth annual Grande Finale on Dec. 31. This family-fun evening will feature two events from 6 to 9 p.m.
South Shore Arts at 138 S. Main St. will host a magical evening with magician Jerry Herzog. There will be two shows, 6 and 8 p.m. Patti Mac the B’loon Lady will be twisting balloons throughout the evening.
The second event, at 7 at the Crown Point Civic Center, 101 S. East St., features an interactive dance party with Dora the Explorer, Boots and Diego. Face painting will be offered and Gerri Wolf will sponsor a special interactive kindermusik activity.
Advance tickets are $5 until 4 p.m. Dec. 30. To purchase tickets, call (219) 662-3290. Tickets on the evening of the event are $15.
Speed to South Shore Arts
During this holiday season, take time to stop in at the South Short Arts to see John Leaser’s exhibit. He is a licensed painter with the company who owns the Speed Racer copyright. A Northwest Indiana native, Leaser has been painting Speed Racer since 1991. The exhibit will be here until Jan. 10.
Welcome to Crown Point
Crown Point Parks Department and Mayor Dave Uran announce the completion of an Eagle Scout project on North Main Street. Marcus Trybula, a member of Boy Scout Troop 45, worked with the parks department to renovate the “Welcome to Crown Point” sign seen when entering the city from the north.
Trybula spent more than 343 hours of planning, designing and leading 21 scouts to complete the project.
The Boy Scouts of America is a not-for-profit service group that believes that volunteering is all about improving the world and touching other people’s lives. Eagle Advancement is the highest award which a scout may earn. Out of all the boys involved in scouting, only one percent will earn the rank of Eagle. Troop 45 is pleased that they have had more than 20 young men achieve this rank.
