GARY | A 72-year-old Gary woman died of her injuries at a local hospital Tuesday afternoon more than three months after being attacked in her home.
Gladys Edge, of 5079 Ohio Court, died at 3:45 p.m. in the intensive care unit of Methodist Hospital Southlake Campus in Merrillville, a spokesperson for the Lake County coroner's office said. The cause of death was listed as blunt force trauma.
The coroner's spokesperson said the woman suffered multiple facial and skull fractures in the attack. The coroner's office, which was not called to the hospital until 11:41 p.m. Tuesday, ruled Edge's death a homicide.
The spokesperson said Edge had been in the hospital for 93 days. He said the woman had been on a ventilator, and the next-of-kin made the decision to remove the ventilator. The coroner's office declined to release the name of her closest relative.
Gary police said Detective Cpl. Art Azcona is in charge of the investigation, and he was not available for comment Wednesday. Nor was Gary police spokesman Sam Roberts available. However, authorities said no one was in custody in connection with the beating.
Not many of the neighbors in the east Glen Park section of Gary where Edge lived said they knew the woman. Some said they had seen her before, but did not know her name.
A resident across the street from Edge, who declined to release his name, said he had heard the woman was beaten up in her home and was hospitalized. He said he didn't know her well enough to have had a conversation with her.
Edge's dull yellow frame house, where the fascia and soffit were falling down, had bars on the front door window. A nearby, dilapidated garage had a hole in it. According to the Lake County assessor's office, Edge was the owner of the home and had lived there since 1993.
Neighbors said a son lived there with her but they didn't know much more about mother or son. Several of the nearby homes were boarded up or vacant.
