BOOK FAIR | Crown Point

National Junior Honor Society students will host a special Ski Lodge Book Fair from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Col. John Wheeler Middle School, 401 W. Joliet St. Proceeds will benefit the media center. The public is welcome to shop titles for teens and adults, including novels, sports guides and best-sellers. NJHS volunteers, dubbed the Crew, have planned the book fair and will run it, learning real-life skills and helping their school. Fair attendees can also build classroom libraries by purchasing books for teachers through the Classroom Wish List program.

TRY NEEDLECRAFTS | Merrilville

Try needlecrafts with the Merrillville Parks and Recreation Department from 10 a.m. to noon Mondays, starting Dec. 8, at Pruzin Community Center, 5750 Tyler Place. Cost for six weeks is $5 for residents and $10 for nonresidents, both beginners and advanced students. Knitting, crocheting, needlepoint-plastic canvas, and tatting are included. Bring your own project and supplies. Registration is required.

CARING FOR BABY | St. John

Community Hospital will offer a grandparents class from 6 to 8 p.m. Dec. 8 at the Community Hospital Outpatient Centre, 9660 U.S. 41. New grandparents can review basic baby care while learning some of the new practices and recommendations for infant care. To register for this free class, call (219) 836-3477.

BREAST-FEEDING CLASS | Crown Point

A breast-feeding class for women and their support people is 7 to 9:30 p.m. Dec. 9 or Dec. 10 at St. Anthony Medical Center, 1201 S. Main St. Topics include the role of the partner, how to feed your baby when you are away and suggestions for returning to work. Class meets the final evening of each Preparing for Childbirth series. Register.

GET IN SHAPE | Crown Point

Crown Point Parks Department and Pilates Center of NWI offer a six-week Pilates class for adults from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesdays, Dec. 9 to Jan. 13 at the Civic Center, 101 S. East St. Class will focus on strengthening muscles, increasing flexibility and improving posture. A more intense "Bump" Pilates class, which incorporates the use of an exercise ball and handweights, will also be offered from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursdays, Dec. 11 to Jan. 29. Cost is $42 per for residents and $55 for nonresidents for each series, with a $7 discount for both classes Bring a traditional yoga mat and/or bath towel. Registration required.

GED TESTING | St. John

GED testing dates are from 5 to 9 p.m. Dec. 9 and 10, Feb. 10 and 11, April 7 and 8, May 5 and 6 and May 26 and 27 at Lake Central High School, 8400 U.S. 41. The Math Video will be shown at 4:40 p.m. All dates are tentative and subject to change. Participants need to set up an appointment to register for the test between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. Monday through Friday in the Lake Central Freshmen Center. Cost is $60 cash, payable at registration. All students must show proof of age and Indiana residency. Anyone 17 years of age must have an Exit Interview signed by the principal of the last school they attended and have successfully passed a pre-test.

EVERGREEN WREATH | Merrillville

Merrillville Adult Education will be offering an Evergreen Wreath Course from 7 to 8 p.m. Dec. 10 at Merrillville High School, 276 E. 68th Place.

Attendees will be provided with a variety of fresh cut evergreens, pine cones and berries and the instructor will assist participants in assembling a 24" wreath that will last throughout the holiday season. Course fee is $25. Registration is required.

EARLY DISMISSAL | Cedar Lake

Students will attend only a half-day of classes Dec. 10 at MacArthur Elementary School, 12900 Fairbanks St., with dismissal at 11:50 a.m. Morning kindergarten students will have class, but afternoon kindergarten will not meet.

MUSIC PROGRAMS | Cedar Lake

The second grade music program will be presented at 7 p.m. Dec. 11 in the cafeteria at MacArthur Elementary School, 12900 Fairbanks St.

EFFECTIVE PARENTING | Highland

Mental Health America of Lake County is offering Systematic Training for Effective Parenting classes to all Northwest Indiana residents. Class will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dec. 13 at Mental Health America, 9722 Parkway Drive. Parents can build a more satisfying and productive connection with their children.

COLLEGE REGISTRATION | Indiana

Students can register now for upcoming classes in the College of Professional Studies at Indiana Tech. Deadline for Session 5 undergraduate courses is Dec. 12. Session 5 classes run from Jan. 4 through Feb. 7, 2009. The College of Professional Studies offers classes at Indiana Tech locations in Fort Wayne, Indianapolis, Elkhart, Greenwood, Hammond, Kendallville, Plainfield, Huntington, and Warsaw as well as other sites around the state. Online classes also are available.
