Non-traditional students - those older than 25 years of age at the start of their college careers - comprise 35 percent of Purdue University Calumet's enrollment of 9,786. "This group is a large staple of what we do as a regional university," says Wes Lukoshus, assistant vice chancellor for advancement at the Hammond-based campus. "These students are juggling other life priorities while they are attending classes, including work and family. They are organized and focused." The economy has played a role in the return of adult students to Purdue Calumet, he says. Some have been laid off. Others are redirecting their current careers.
