Pierogi Fest
Whiting, Ind.
This year marks the 18th annual Pierogi Fest and the weekend of July 27, 28, and 29th, thousands will again flock to the streets of Whiting to eat, laugh, and have fun in the summer sun. Sarah Hildebranski, executive director of the Whiting-Robertsdale Chamber of Commerce, says you don't have to like pierogis to come to the festival, but you do want to come expecting to have a great time.
"The past two years we've had more food vendors at the Pierogi Fest than at the Taste of Chicago. Food is the big draw, but also the atmosphere. The parade on Friday night is a huge hit and you'll never find anything crazier. We have characters, people who dress up like pierogis, songs, and it's a festival that is unlike any others. All types of entertainment take place through all three days on four stages; we have a kids' corner with a bounce house, rides, and games; the beer garden is a huge draw; we have international dancers; and our contests, the pierogi toss and pierogi eating contest. There's something for everyone," says Hildebranski.
