BEST DOWNTOWN (NWI)
Crown Point
Crown Point's historical downtown has character, resilience, and refinement. The courthouse and the square are the heart and soul of the town. Almost every major (and minor) city event follows a path to downtown, from the annual Corn Roast, Taste of Crown Point, and Saturday Farmer's Markets in the summer to the Doll Parade, Easter Egg Hunt and Santa's Holiday Parade during the holidays. And the thriving locally-owned shops and dining establishments complement the many downtown buildings with historical significance. For instance, take a trip to the Sheriff's House (built in 1882), which was home to local sheriffs for 76 continual years in the front of the building that housed the infamous John Dillinger in the back (the then Lake County Jail) until he escaped in 1934. Check out the website to plan your own day trip - the possibilities are endless.
Quote: "The quality of the businesses here has improved in the last several years. I think our downtown has a lot of restaurants and shops that give it a close-knit, familiar feel as opposed to the typical strip mall." - Randy Sekerez, Owner, Old Town Square Antique Mall
