Dubbed "The Gateway to Michigan," New Buffalo, Mich., offers everything from shopping to windsurfing. Visitors find small boutique shops with clothing, a dazzling variety of gift items they'll want for themselves, and eateries ranging from nosh-on-the-go hot dogs, to friendly pubs, to upscale cuisine.

At the end of the main drag is the Lake Michigan beach, for sunbathers, windsurfers, boaters, and the annual Ship to Shore Festival.

"People keep coming back to New Buffalo because there is something for everyone," says Viki Gudas, executive director of the Harbor Country Chamber of Commerce.

"It's a great place to visit for a day or longer."
