Volunteers are the backbone of any organization, says Betty Clayton, executive director of the Humane Society of Northwest Indiana. This small animal shelter was founded in 1913 and moved to its present location in the Miller Beach area to increase its visibility more than 20 years ago. With only six employees, the Humane Society of Northwest Indiana relies on its 75 volunteers to help walk the dogs, brush and groom the animals, play with cats and kittens, socialize puppies and provide clerical assistance, Clayton says. In addition volunteers help plan fundraisers and Tag Days that bring in needed resources.
