With 640 active volunteers, Humane Society Calumet Area relies heavily on its volunteer base. “We care for up to 350 animals per day,” said Jennifer Bacino, volunteer coordinator at the non-profit shelter. “We rely on our volunteers to help us clean, feed, bathe, groom and socialize the animals, as well as do all the dishes and laundry.”
They also assist with special events, are involved in humane education with youth groups and are mentors. Shelter volunteers are showing their love for the shelter, naming it as the Best Place to Volunteer in the region.
“They truly are our heroes,” Bacino said. “We could not serve Northwest Indiana without them. I consider myself very lucky to be able to work with so many who recognize the joy of giving back to their community.”
