Thanks to a unique partnership between M&M Home Remodeling Services and its suppliers, Doug Rachowicz, who was the sole survivor of an explosion in Afghanistan that killed four of his fellow soldiers from the Valparaiso-based 713th Engineer Co. of the Indiana National Guard, came home to upgraded Hammond home.
"When you've been in the same business for over 35 years in the same area, you get to know people," Nick Yadron, who works with his father Mike, the founder of M&M in 1976, said. "We felt like the upgrades to his Hammond home were the least we could give back to him."
