Well, it’s one down and one to go in Calumet City.

The February primary is history. Those associated with Mayor Michelle were successful with one notable exception. Fifth ward alderman Roger Munda was defeated by DeJuan Gardner. And Samuel Bullocks, who was appointed by the mayor to fill the vacant seat of Antoine Collins who had moved from Calumet City, is now affiliated with a slate known as the Public Safety party.

At the top of the ticket for the Public Safety Party is Larry Young. He is a retired lieutenant of the Cook County Sheriff’s Department. He will be opposed by Mayor Michelle Markiewicz –Qualkinbush who’s seeking her fourth full term.

Incumbent City Clerk Nyota Figgs will face Chanzia Nathan, while Treasurer Gerry Tarka will be opposed by Rene Chandler.

The aldermanic races look like this:

1st ward – Mike Navarrete is unopposed

2nd ward – incumbent “Leni” Woczyinski is opposed by Gina Young

3rd ward- DeAndre Tillman is unopposed

4th ward – incumbent Ramonde Williams faces Phil Mason

5th ward – DeJuan Gardner will face Lisa Garland

6th ward – incumbent Nick Manousopoulos will face a challenge from Lora Watts

7th ward- incumbent Samuel Bullocks faces Anthony Smith

I am unaware of any public forum at which the candidates will speak. But it is a good idea to familiarize yourself with them if you’re a Cal City resident.

I’ll write more as I find out.

Last year the Calumet Memorial Park District Foundation was born. It is a 501 © (3) not-for-profit organization formed to help finance improvements, implementation of programs, and acquisitions for our park district. Funds donated through the foundation are tax deductible.

Our first event is a Boots & Badges, firefighters v. police basketball game.

Several area departments will show off their athletic skills on Saturday, March 18 at TF North gym. Games will be at 3:00 and 4:15.

Part of the event will be a meal and fellowship at the Hideaway Lounge, 1245 Burnham Ave. after the games.

Tickets for the games are $10 and tickets for the game and the festivities at the Hideaway are $20. Contact me or the Park District 708 862 6440 for more info.

Come out and support both your park district and our first responders.

Congrats to coach Tim Bankston and the Meteors basketball team on a fine 23-4 record this season. Wins against perennial rivals Hillcrest and TF South were especially sweet. Sadly, the successful season ended too early with a loss in the massively tough Thornton regional.
