March in Indiana is Disability Awareness Month, and this year’s theme is “Inclusion is Within Everyone’s Ability." The Indiana’s Governor Council for People With Disabilities reports that children and adults with disabilities make up around 19 percent of Indiana’s population.

You might be wondering, what does Girls on the Run have to do with disabilities? My answer would be a lot!

The majority of the staff at Girls on the Run of NWI are parents of children who have special needs. We value the richness of diversity that our children, and all the children in our communities, bring to our world. We also can empathize with other parents and understand the complexities of having a family member with some extra needs.

Our programming throughout Northwest Indiana is fully inclusive for any girl who wishes to join us. We believe that every girl can reach her limitless potential!

In the near future, our office will be included in the same space as the Down Syndrome Association of NWI and Chicagoland Area. While we believe that all of our programming is fully inclusive and can accommodate the needs of any girl, we also recognize that there may be a need to have a GOTR team in the area that is exclusively for girls with disabilities. Our plan is to eventually have a team at our office.

If you would like to volunteer at our office or help to support a girl with special needs at her school Girls on the Run team, please email Toni Modglin at toni.modglin@girlsontherun.org.

Girls on the Run would like to remind everyone that our lives our enriched when we open our hearts and minds to those who have different perspectives and experiences than we do. We teach our girls that our uniqueness is what makes us wonderful! Spread the word!
