Valparaiso at Chesterton football

Valparaiso players celebrate their win over Chesterton Friday at Chesterton.

Jonathan Miano, The Times

If it wasn't apparent already, we've now got confirmation.

Five weeks into the prep football season, the Valparaiso Vikings are considered state title contenders.

Valparaiso rose two spots to No. 3 in Class 6A in this week's AP state poll after submitting yet another dominant defensive performance in a 14-0 win over Chesterton.

The Vikings are one of two Region teams in the top five of their respective classification, as Lowell maintained its second-ranked spot in 4A following a 27-13 victory over Kankakee Valley. The Red Devils received three first-place votes this week as one of only six unbeatens in 4A.

Also in the rankings: the Michigan City Wolves at No. 8 in 5A.

Some might wonder why the Hobart Brickies have yet to ascend into the 4A top 10. We have no legitimate explanation.
