The Region is gearing up for a big, possibly unprecedented weekend at the state wrestling finals Feb. 16-17 in Indianapolis.
Local wrestlers are ranked first or second at numerous weights, including 106 (Portage's Jacob Moran and Merrillville's Martin Cruz), 145 (Portage's Kasper McIntosh), 170 (Hobart's Zack Fattore), 195 (Chesterton's Lucas Davison), 220 (Merrillville's Brandon Streck) and 285 (Chesterton's Eli Pokorney) in addition to several others ranked in the top five by Indiana Mat. NWI had six state champions in 2010 and five a number of times. That benchmark is within reach.
Portage figures to have at least eight qualifiers and is bidding to become the area's first team champion in the current format since Chesterton in 1988. Crown Point won team state in 2009 when there was a duals tournament.
