GARY | The RailCats aren't simply fighting the emotional toll that a losing streak can take, they're battling Mother Nature for another game.

The team opened batting practice to a rain storm Tuesday as the tarp was pulled onto the field just before their 4:30 p.m. start.

The 'Cats jumped ahead of the .500 mark with a win Monday night against four-time Can-Am League champion Quebec, behind a crashing double by Cristian Guerrero and a pitching gem from Morgan Coombs.

The win halted a four-game losing streak that stretched to a loss in Amarillo, and gives the RailCats two victories in their last eight games.

Quebec has lost four of its last six games, all of those to American Association teams.

After the rain started at 4:25 and ended about 5 p.m., the RailCats field crew worked diligently to clear the water from the tarp and the field. As of 6:25 p.m., both bullpens were still "bullponds."

First inning

Jeff Helps strikes out swinging. Zac Mitchell snags a ball up the middle hit by Jonathan Malo for the second out. Sebastien Boucher singles down the third-base line. Rene Leveret strikes out on eight pitches. Mid 1st inning: Capitales 0, RailCats 0

Adam Klein grounds out to first, the ball bounces off the first baseman's chest, and is grabbed by pitcher Bryan Rembisz on the run for the out. Mike Massaro flies out to left field. Cristian Guerrero and the rest of the on-field crew miss that Guerrero was pitched a fourth ball, he grounds an extra pitch out to second base. End 1st inning: RailCats 0, Capitales 0.

Second inning

Josue Peley opens with a double. Royce Consigli singles to move Peley to third. Asif Shah grounds back to the mound and Will Krout tags out Peley at third. A wild pitch advances the runners. Patrick D'Aoust grounds out to third, scoring Consigli. A groundout by Carlos Willoughby ends the inning. Mid 2nd inning: Capitales 1, RailCats 0

Craig Maddox hits a home run over the left-field wall that was a no-question bomb to tie the game. Steve Liddle is walked. Brian Kolb grounds to third where Liddle is taken out at second. Kolb legs out the throw to first to halt the double play. Drew Martinez flies out to right, leaving Kolb on first. Zac Mitchell flies out to right. End 2nd inning: RailCats 1, Capitales 1

Third inning

Jeff Helps lead off with a single. Jonathan Malo pops out foul to catcher. Sebastien Boucher walks. Rene Leveret singles to load the bases. Josue Peley grounds into a double play. Mid 3rd inning: RailCats 1, Capitales 1

Chase Tucker flies out to center. Adam Klein strikes out swinging on three pitches. Wow. Mike Massaro grounds out to first. End 3rd inning: RailCats 1, Capitales 1

Fourth inning

Royce Consigli singles up the middle. Asif Shah follows with a single. Patrick D'Aoust hits a sac bunt to put both runners in scoring position. Carlos Willoughby is called for a strikeout, protested by the batter because he claims it hit his hand, which at the very least would be a foul ball. He's allowed to stay and on the next pitch strikes out swinging. Jeff Helps singles home Consigli and Shah. Jonathan Malo flies out to center. Mid 4th inning: Capitales 3, RailCats 1

Cristian Guerrero pops out foul to first base. Craig Maddox grounds out to second and Steve Liddle pops out foul to third. That's a quick inning. End 4th inning: Capitales 3, RailCats 1

Fifth inning

Sebastien Boucher hits a ball to right field caught by Mike Massaro at the wall. Rene Leveret flies out to center field. Josue Peley hits a single down the third-base line that Brian Kolb was waiting to roll foul. Royce Consigli flies out to right. Mid 5th inning: Capitales 3, RailCats 1

Brian Kolb flies out to right field, a ball caught on the slide by Asif Shah. Drew Martinez flies out to center. Zac Mitchell singles to give the RailCats a two-out runner. Chase Tucker strikes out swinging. End 5th inning: Capitales 3, RailCats 1

Sixth inning

Asif Shah opens with a single. Patrick D'Aoust flies out to center. Carlos Willoughby grounds into a double play -- Chase Tucker steps on second then hurdles the ball to first. Mid 6th inning: Capitales 3, RailCats 1

Adam Klein grounds out to short. Mike Massaro grounds out to first. Cristian Guerrero gives the 'Cats a two-out base runner with a single. Guerrero takes second on a wild pitch. Craig Maddox pops out to second. End 6th inning: Capitales 3, RailCats 1

Seventh inning

Jeff Helps grounds out to second, Jonathan Malo grounds out to short and Sebastien Boucher flies out to left. A quick 1-2-3 inning. 7th-inning stretch: Capitales 3, RailCats 1

Steve Liddle flies out to center. Brian Kolb grounds out to short. Drew Martinez singles to give the RailCats a two-out runner for the third straight inning. Martinez steals second. He's caught off base trying to take third. End 7th inning: Capitales 3, RailCats 1

Eighth inning

Taylor Sewitt replaces Will Krout, who went 7 IP, 10 H, 3 R, 1 BB, 3 SO, 2 WP. It was the first seven-inning outing for Krout since May 28. Rene Leveret hits a leadoff single. Josue Peley grounds into a double play. That's it for Sewitt as James Adkins will come in to pitch to two left-handed hitters. Royce Consigli is issued a walk. The first pitch to Asif Shah is a ball and that'll prompt a meeting on the mound. Shah grounds out to first. Mid 8th inning: Capitales 3, RailCats 1

Zac Mitchell grounds out to the first baseman. Chase Tucker flies out to left. Adam Klein grounds out to the mound trying to bunt. Klein had reached base in the last 20 games. He hasn't tonight. End 8th inning: Capitales 3, RailCats 1

Ninth inning

Patrick D'Aoust doubles. Carlos Willoughby hits a ball to third that is called safe as the ball was caught on a dive and first-base ump Pat McLaughlin says second baseman Chase Tucker was off the bag. There's some disagreement on the field, leading to a con-fab and he's finally ruled out. This one really is called an error, a bad throw by Zac Mitchell. The RailCats have made an error in each of their last six games. James Adkins loads the bases with a walk to Jonathan Malo. Sebastien Boucher pops out to second. Rene Leveret flies out to center. Mid 9th inning: Capitales 3, RailCats 1

Bryan Rembisz returns for the ninth inning. He's thrown 110 pitches. Mike Massaro grounds out to second. Cristian Guerrero walks. That'll be it for Rembisz. He'll be replaced by Casey Harman after 8 1/3 innings and 122 pitches. Craig Maddox strikes out looking. Steve Liddle strikes out swinging. FINAL: Capitales 3, RailCats 1

AFTER THE GAME

Mike Massaro and Adam Klein broke on-base streaks that stretched 20-or-more games. Greg Tagert talked about the offensive production. The RailCats scattered four hits, one in four different innings, and left four runners on base. In three different innings, the 'Cats put runners on with two out and couldn't move any past second base.

"We've got to compete a little better offensively, especially our top two guys," Tagert said. "We didn't get much accomplished offensively and did exactly what Rembisz wanted us to do, we chased a lot of first pitches and that's very uncharacteristic of our club. Give him the credit, he's tough, but we're a little bit out of our element. Again, when our two guys at the top of the lineup don't get on, that really effects the rest of the crew.

"We'll keep searching, it's just one of those games we came out on the short end.

"It's nice to see (the homer) from Craig, it takes a lot of pressure off of Cristian. We've seen it out of Craig before and Steve Liddle has the background. It's not like we're asking these guys to hit homers, but Cristian takes some of the responsibility because it's what he does, that's his best skill. Something like that hopefully kick starts a couple of other guys. Not necessarily a home run, but a couple of extra bases, something we're lacking that we've had in years past."
