GARY | The RailCats have already made a change to their rotation now that they are playoff bound: today's starting pitcher.

Tim Verthein, who was picked up on Aug. 23 when the team could add a 23rd player, will start today's game in lieu of Morgan Coombs. Instead, Coombs is set to start Monday's 1:10 p.m. game.

Saturday night, Tagert said that he would look at all opportunities to rest players and pitchers in preparation for the postseason. Alain Quijano is set to start Game 1 on Wednesday.

First inning

In his pro debut, Tim Verthein walks the first batter he sees, Maikol Gonzalez. Oscar Mesa grounds out to short, Gonzalez already had the jump and reached second well ahead of the ball reaching Ryan Brockett's glove. Wellington Dotel hits a ball that appears to be foul, is called fair, and the El Paso bullpen pitchers sitting right on the line thought it was foul so they touched the ball. Umps rule it a ground-rule double, scoring Gonzalez. Sergio Burruel pops out third base. Juan Apodaca strikes out swinging. Mid-1st inning: Diablos 1, RailCats 0

Adam Klein fouls into the catcher's mitt for the first out. Mike Massaro flies out to left field. Cristian Guerrero singles into right. Reid Fronk is hit in the elbow with a pitch. Craig Maddox strikes out swinging. End 1st inning: Diablos 1, RailCats 0

Second inning

Anthony D'Alfonso grounds out to first base. Gabriel Suarez grounds out to third base. Miguel Chacon grounds out to second with a slow roller. Mid 2nd inning: Diablos 1, RailCats 0

Brian Kolb singles up the middle. Drew Martinez grounds into a double play that takes out Kolb at second. Ryan Brockett strikes out swinging. End 2nd inning: Diablos 1, RailCats 0

Third inning

Chris Canedo grounds out to short. Maikol Gonzalez grounds out to second. Can Oscar Mesa go first or third? Nope. Mesa is walked. Wellington Dotel flies out to left. Mid 3rd inning: Diablos 1, RailCats 0

Rolando Petit enters the game at first base for Chris Canedo at third among other infield moves. Nick Liles opens the inning with a double down the third-base line (no one in the RailCats bullpen tries to touch it). Adam Klein hits an infield single bunt, the RailCats have runners on the corners. Mike Massaro grounds to second, where Adam Klein is taken out as Liles scores; Massaro is safe on first. Cristian Guerrero knocks a homer that hits the scoreboard and comes to rest on the top of the signage while also scoring Massaro. Reid Fronk is walked. Craig Maddox grounds out to first and moves Fronk to second. Reid Fronk is picked off at second base. End 3rd inning: RailCats 3, Diablos 1

Fourth inning

Ryan Babineau will take over in left field for the RailCats, spelling Adam Klein. Babineau is quickly tested and passes with a line drive to left off the bat of Sergio Burruel, out No. 1. Juan Apodaca flies out to right field. Anthony D'Alfonso grounds out to second. Mid 4th inning: RailCats 3, Diablos 1

Brian Kolb grounds out to third base. As does Drew Martinez. Ryan Brockett grounds out to short. End 4th inning: RailCats 3, Diablos 1

Fifth inning

Gabriel Suarez pops out to first base. Miguel Chacon hits a foul ball to first base. Rolando Petit flies out to center field. Mid 5th inning: RailCats 3, Diablos 1

Nick Liles pops out to short. Ryan Babineau flies out to deeep right field. Mike Massaro is caught checking his swing. End 5th inning: RailCats 3, Diablos 1

Sixth inning

Maikol Gonzalez grounds out to third base. Oscar Mesa singles between first and second, the first hit allowed by Verthein since the first inning. There's a meeting on the mound with Jake Upwood. Verthein is at 73 pitches. Mesa steals second. Wellington Dotel is walked. That'll be it for Verthein as Greg Tagert walks to the mound. Verthein is replaced by Chuck Fontana. Sergio Burruel hits a fielder's choice that takes out Mesa at third base. A throwing error by Ryan Brockett scores Dotel and puts both runners in scoring position. Anthony D'Alfonso doubles into the left-center gap to score Burruel and Apodaca. Gabriel Suarez strikes out swinging. Mid 6th inning: Diablos 4, RailCats 3

Cristian Guerrero strikes out swinging. Reid Fronk doubles into right field. Craig Maddox strikes out swinging. Brian Kolb strikes out swinging. End 6th inning: Diablos 4, RailCats 3

Seventh inning

Miguel Chacon grounds out to second. Rolando Petit flies out to left. Maikol Gonzalez strikes out looking, he disagrees with the call and is pointing at the ump. His manager escorts him off the field. He tosses his helmet and batting gloves, then starts jawing again as he walks to field his position, at which point he's tossed from the game. Mid 7th inning: Diablos 4, RailCats 3

A whole mess of changes defensively. Ultimately, Chacon is your new shortstop. Ryan Brockett earns a single on a ball that is a tough catch and bobbled at first base. There's a meeting on the mound with Kevin Cooper. Nick Liles singles. Ryan Babineau strikes out swinging. Mike Massaro singles to score Brockett and tie the game. Cristian Guerrero grounds out to second, though he's called safe then out by Joe Stegner. Had he been safe, he'd have scored two runs. End 7th inning: Diablos 4, RailCats 4

Eighth inning

Will Krout is the new RailCats pitcher. He delivers a strikeout to Oscar Mesa. Wellington Dotel grounds out to third. Sergio Burruel grounds out to first. Mid 8th inning: RailCats 4, Diablos 4

Justin Kuks will pitch for El Paso. Reid Fronk pops out to second base. Craig Maddox singles into shallow right field. Brian Kolb singles into center. That's it Justin Kuks. He's replaced by former RailCat Marshall Schuler. Schuler gives up a single to Drew Martinez to load the bases. Ryan Brockett doubles to left to score Maddox and Kolb. Nick Liles singles to score Drew Martinez. Ryan Babineau grounds into a double play. End 8th inning: RailCats 7, Diablos 4

Ninth inning

Estevan Uriegas will pitch the ninth for the RailCats. Juan Apodaca grounds out to first. Anthony D'Alfonso doubles into the right field corner. Uriegas strikes out Gabriel Suarez. Miguel Chacon grounds out to second. FINAL: RailCats 7, Diablos 4
