GARY | The RailCats open against a Wichita team that hasn't allowed a postseason run since losing in the American Association Championship Series in three games to Winnipeg last season.

The RailCats, meanwhile, haven't been shutout since the playoffs opener to Fargo-Moorhead, a pitchers' duel in which the RedHawks scored both runs in the eighth inning.

Prior to that, the RailCats hadn't recorded a shutout since July 25 against Sioux City.

RailCats reliever Estevan Uriegas and Wingnuts left fielder Jared McDonald refuse to leave the field after the national anthem while both managers exchange lineup cards. McDonald shakes off the first request to leave by the ump, then is forced to head off first. Uriegas receives congrats from his team for holding out the longest. Turns out the NCAA has banned this practice of "National Anthem Standoff."

First inning

Ryan Khoury grounds out to second base. Jake Kahaulelio strikes out swinging. John Rodriguez grounds out to short. Mid 1st inning: Wingnuts 0, RailCats 0

Adam Klein grounds out to short. Mike Massaro singles into right field, breaking his bat. Cristian Guerrero has the benefit of Brent Clevlen losing the ball in the lights for a single, putting runners on the corners. Reid Fronk pops out to second. Craig Maddox grounds out to short. End 1st inning: Wingnuts 0, RailCats 0

Second inning

CJ Ziegler is walked to open the inning. Brent Clevlen pops out foul behind the plate. Abel Nieves singles up the middle. Cole Armstrong flies out to center, moving Ziegler to third. David Amberson doubles up the middle, scoring Ziegler. Jared McDonald strikes out swinging. Mid 2nd inning: Wingnuts 1, RailCats 0

Brian Kolb flies out to center. Drew Martinez turns a 3-0 advantage into a 3-2 fly ball to left. Zac Mitchell strikes out swinging. End 2nd inning: Wingnuts 1, RailCats 0.

Third inning

Ryan Khoury pops out to short. Jake Kahaulelio hits a high fly ball foul behind the plate, chased down by both Craig Maddox and Reid Fronk, eventually caught by Fronk. John Rodriguez hits a two-out double. CJ Ziegler is walked. Brent Clevlen hits to third, the ball pops out of Brian Kolb's glove, but that's OK because Zac Mitchell is right there to back him up and make the throw to second. Mid 3rd inning: Wingnuts 1, RailCats 0

Danny Pulfer grounds out to third. Adam Klein strikes out looking (that doesn't happen often). Mike Massaro grounds out to short. End 3rd inning: Wingnuts 1, RailCats 0

Fourth inning

Abel Nieves strikes out swinging. Cole Armstrong flies out to right field. David Amberson hits an infield single. Amberson steals second. Jared McDonald flies out to center, leaving Amberson on. Mid 4th inning: Wingnuts 1, RailCats 0

Cristian Guerrero singles up the middle. Reid Fronk is walked. Craig Maddox singles up the middle to load the bases. Brian Kolb lines out to second. Drew Martinez grounds into a double play. End 4th inning: Wingnuts 1, RailCats 0

Fifth inning

Ryan Khoury singles to second to give Wichita a lead-off runner. Jake Kahaulelio strikes out and is thrown out at first. John Rodriguez grounds to the mound where Khoury is out on a 1-6-5-6-2 rundown. Rodriguez is on second on the fielders' choices. CJ Ziegler things he's been walked, but instead he's out looking at a 3-2 pitch. Mid 5th inning: Wingnuts 1, RailCats 0

Zac Mitchell grounds out to second. Danny Pulfer has the first extra-base hit for the RailCats with a double. Adam Klein doubles into deeeeeeep right field, scoring Pulfer. Mike Massaro singles up the middle, Massaro takes second when the Wingnuts opt to throw home to try to catch Klein running. Guerrero strikes out swinging. So does Reid Fronk. End 5th inning: RailCats 1, Wingnuts 1

 

Sixth inning

Brent Clevlen grounds out to second. Abel Nieves also grounds out to second. Alain Quijano is at 99 pitches. Cole Armstrong grounds out to first. Mid 6th inning: RailCats 1, Wingnuts 1

Craig Maddox breaks his bat on a single past short. Brian Kolb hits an infield single to second. Drew Martinez lays down a bunt that takes out Maddox at third, there are still two on. Zac Mitchell is walked to load the bases. Danny Pulfer pops out foul to first base. That's it for Guerra, who will be replaced by lefty Nick Walters. Adam Klein is walked, scoring Kolb. Mike Massaro lays down a bunt single to score Martinez. RailCatting? Anyone? RailCatting! Nick Walters is done after two batters, he's replaced by righty Daniel Bennett. Cristian Guerrero strikes out swinging. That's two runs on three hits and no errors, three are left on. End 6th inning: RailCats 3, Wingnuts 1

Seventh inning

David Amberson hits an infield single. Jared McDonald flies out to right field. Ryan Khoury is walked. On his 114th pitch of the night Jake Kahaulelio sends a homer over the left-field wall to also score Amberson and Khoury for the 4-3 lead. John Rodriguez flies out to left. That's it for Quijano, he'll be replaced by Will Krout. CJ Ziegler is walked. Brent Clevlen grounds out to short. Mid 7th inning: Wingnuts 4, RailCats 3

James Giuletti takes the mound for Wichita. Reid Fronk singles into right. Ryan Babineau will hit for Craig Maddox. Ryan Babineau singles up the middle. Brian Kolb bunts to put both runners in scoring position. Nick Liles will pinch hit for Drew Martinez. Bases are loaded as Liles is walked. Zac Mitchell is hit with a 1-0 pitch to score Fronk and tie the game. That's it for Guiletti, who is replaced with RHP Andrew Aizenstadt. On the first pitch he sees, Danny Pulfer doubles down the first-base line to to score Babineau and Liles. Adam Klein hits a sac fly to center that scores Mitchell, that's the third RBI for Klein. Mike Massaro grounds out to second. End 7th inning: RailCats 7, Wingnuts 4

Eighth inning

Defensive changes are straight up: Liles will be in center, Babineau will catch. Abel Nieves flies out to right. Estevan Uriegas will pitch for the RailCats, replacing Krout. Cole Armstrong is walked. David Amberson singles down the third-base line. That's it for Uriegas, who is replaced by Kyle Lindquist. Jared McDonald is walked. Ryan Khoury hits a checked-swing single and Lindquist fields it back to home for the second out. Jake Kahaulelio pops out to second. Mid 8th inning: RailCats 7, Wingnuts 4

Cristian Guerrero hits a bloop single that careens off the pitcher. Reid Fronk singles into right-center. Ryan Babineau lays down a sac bunt to move both runners into scoring position. Brian Kolb singles to score Guerrero. Nick Liles grounds to second, where Kolb is out as Fronk scores. Zac Mitchell singles into right to put two on. Erik Lambe replaces Aizenstadt. Danny Pulfer grounds out to short. End 8th inning: RailCats 9, Wingnuts 4

Ninth inning

Ian Durham comes in to replace Lindquist. John Rodriguez hits a swinging bunt that is fielded by Babineau to out-gun him at first. CJ Ziegler singles up the middle. Brent Clevlen flies out to left. Ziegler takes second on a defensive indifference. Cole Armstrong strikes out looking. FINAL: RailCats 9, Wingnuts 4
