All four lanes on Indianapolis Boulevard from Ridge Road to 81st Street in Highland should be open to traffic by mid-November as the Indianapolis Department of Transportation winds up work on the $10.4 million project, said INDOT spokesman Matt Deitchley.

Traffic has been restricted to two lanes for months on that stretch of road, with contractors now finishing up paving on the eastern side of the road. The bridge that formerly carried Indianapolis Boulevard over abandoned railroad tracks there has been demolished.

As part of the project, a tunnel under Indianapolis Boulevard has been constructed for bicycles and pedestrians. On the north end of the project, near the Coach USA bus terminal, a large pumping station is under construction to deal with the frequent flooding in the area, which is immediately east of Wicker Park.

Work on the pumping station and some other finishing touches for the road may continue after all four lanes are open, Deitchley said.

The project began in August 2011 and follows several others along Indianapolis Boulevard over the years in Highland and Schererville, which have widened the road and improved intersections. About 21,500 vehicles per day were using the portion between Ridge Road and 81st Street before construction started last year.
